I am looking for a Tow vehicle and have found a '98 5.0L Ltd Explorer with AWD, 127,000kms (78914.0 Miles). They say it has the Tow package but I am suspicious because it does not have the class III hitch which I understand is standard for the Tow package, something I read searching the forums. Am I on the right track?

On a side note would the 5.0L set-up be good for towing a travel trailer? I was thiking of a 21ft approx 3500Lbs + once loaded up.

I have never owned a Explorer, or in fact towed so I am trying to get my head around the whole thing.

Thanks in advance

The tow package consists of 3.73LS rear, tranny cooler, and a connector in the back for the lights. Ford did not include the hitch.
I tow a 4500# camper with ease. Just make sure you use sway control and weight distrubution for safety!

Welcome to the site. I don't know where you found the info that they included a class III hitch. There was a big arguement, and Wpurple is right on the money with what a tow hitch includes.

Thanks for the information. I guess identifying the cooler will be relatively easy, the diff ratio will be another thing. I will look around and see if I can find any info on identifying the diff.

Thanks again.

Excellent forum I might add.

Regards

Look on the driver's side door sticker, under axle, it will say D4 for 3.73 limited slip.

the AWD 5.0 V8 can tow up to 6,500 lbs with the right hitch and gears.(from our '97 V8s owners manual)

you can find the gear code on the door. D4 is limitedslip 3:73..pretty sure that truck would have it.

EDIT: you beat me to it todd :D

I think every AWD V8 is a 3.73 LS. I looked at least 40 of them and all of them were D4 axle codes.

That's what I have in my Eddie. Now just need to know if I have the tranny cooler. No plans to do any hauling any time soon, but maybe down the road.

I agree EVERY single 5.0L Ex I have seen has been 3.73. UNless you ordered it from the factory with 4.10's........

6500# you say? interesting.

Lets see BII + flatbed trailer + tools and spare parts = about #5500

Excellent news :) hahaha However I am guessing that is asking ALOT of a 4 door ex to tow another 4x4 on a flatbed..
I will be using mine to tow my boat, have considered using it to tow the BII...hmmm

410, it was either 6,000 or 6,500 i will look again today in the owners manual when i'm out putting the intake on my dads V8.

The 2wd 5.0 has a max trailer capacity of 6,700. The AWD has slightly less capacity.
