My 98 5.0 is leaking coolant down past the crankshaft pulley, did the research, suspect timing cover gasket leak.

so i started to remove the fan waterpump etc. and dig into replacing the gaskets.

I've already snapped off 2 bolts getting the waterpump off, they are seized into the timing cover, dunno how i'm gonna get it off

right now i stuck with the crankshaft pulley coming off.

I bought a puller, but do you think i can get the bolts to thread in anywhere?

I think the pulley and dampener come off as an assembly don't they?

there are 3 slots in front of pulley that apparently go nowhere, the bolts go all the way through and don't thread into anything.

do i need to somehow remove the pulley first to be able to get the dampener off? and how does that come off?

i'm growing more and more frustrated with this project, thought it would be straight forward.

its a pita at the moment.

nothing?

There are 3 threaded holes to mount the dampner puller, make sure to use something protect the snout threads so they dont get marred up.

I had to zip through the boss to relieve the pressure and get the kroil in there, pounded an etorx onto the stud and it backed right out. I think another one broke also but I cannot recall. Windsor water pump bolts=always fun.

so you're implying that i'm gonna have to wreck the timing cover to get it off?

i can't see anything on the crank i'll have to look again tomorrow, thanks for your help.

I'm showing you how I removed mine. And I reused the cover, there is no coolant in a bolt boss. I've got 26k miles on mine since change.

My puller set has 15 sets of 3 bolts/studs of different sizes to pull just about anything. I bolted the puller tight to the dampner and it pulled right off. Pretty sure the puller bolts are 5/16-18 and will be rusty and hiding.

When its all said and done make sure you seal up the pan to timing cover good and let the sealer dry overnight before you go starting it up, which soaks the sealer with oil, effectively releasing the sealant and it will surely leak oil then.

alright well right now i'm still screwed because i can't get the crankshaft pulley off.

in the haynes book it says to use the bolt style puller and then it shows a picture of it being used to take off the balancer without the pulley even attached.

i guess i'm gonna have to go get a regular pulley puller now as well.

are you talking about the harmonic balancer or the pulley in front of it.

the pulley in front of the balancer has 3 slots in it that go all to the way to block, nothing to thread into that i can find, unless i'm missing something.

can't find pictures for anything anywhere.

I couldnt imagine using a giant 3 jaw puller on an automotive damper but I am pro whatever works as long as nothing is damaged, the tone ring behind the balancer is fragile so whatch for that if you do go 3 jaw.

Yes there are 3 threaded holes in the balancer for pulling purposes, the accessory drive pulley is integral to the balancer.

oh my frickin god.

so yeah thanks for the pic, i also looked it up on google for a picture.

turns out there was so much grime/crap inside the pulley that the holes were completely covered. couldn't even tell they were there, so after scraping and scraping and blowing it out with air, the holes were discovered, then of course the bolts with the puller were too short so i had to buy longer ones.

but anyways i got it off and then the timing cover.

ended up breaking the ears off completely to get the broken bolts off.
so i guess i get to buy a new timing cover as well.

well i go back to work tomorrow, so time will be limited until i'm off work again.

so thanks for the help.

i'm gonna be spending more money on this thing again, hope it doesn't leak after all this garbage is done.

What did you beat or pry it off ? Oil pan flange survive ok ?

i just pryed on it gently from top and bottom and worked it loose. oil pan flange is fine.

so i cut the gasket corners and ordered all the parts today.

i already have it cleaned up.

so when the timing set comes along with the new cover and gasket etc, hopefully within the next week it'll be going back together.

What is the size of the center bolt in the crank pulley? Socket size metric and standard

Bolt head is 15/16". If memory serves, the bolt itself is 9/16-18 (fine thread).
The easiest way to remove is with an impact wrench, but unless you have a very short one, it won't fit with the radiator in place. Plenty of torque needed, so without an impact wrench you have to block the engine rotation, probably by holding the flex plate.
