5 speed Stuck in 4th, HELP!!!!!!

OK,

I have a '94 Explorer w/ 5 speed trans but while driving got a nice whining sound and then shifted into 4th gear, the whining went away but now the trans is stuck in 4th gear making driving almost impossible (the clutch works as normal, just one gear is there instead of 5=reverse). The clutch is fine and all is well as even 4 wheel drive will engage but nothing short of a sledgehammer will get this thing out of gear I am afraid. I have tried (wiggling, pushing, etc) to get it out of gear but it is stuck!

Any ideas????

My escort gets stuck in 5th all the time. Easiest way I found to get it out was to release the clutch to the point of stalling and it usually pops out. Try and see if that works.

If your tranny started whining before it happened, there's a good chance your tranny input shaft has gone south and taken the transmission with it. My '92 had the same problem, and I ended up having to have the whole thing rebuilt.
