5r55e to 4r55e swap?

I have a 2000 Explorer with the 4.0 sohc and the 5r55e trans is slipping. A buddy of mine has a 99 Ranger that he blew up but it’s a 3.0, hence the 4r55e. My explorer is just a play toy it never sees anything past 2nd gear really. So is the trans swap possible? I’ve got both trucks sitting beside each other so I’ve got parts for days

But the bellhousing can be changed on the 4r / 5r

I have heard of using a 5r in place of a 4r but never vise versa
I do know who to ask

The 99 ranger trans must have the second speed sensor in the side of the trans like your 03 wiring harness is expecting to see

Totally get it’s unorthodox haha. Can’t beat free though, right? I know internally the transmissions are similar. The explorer is an early 2000 (built in 99) so I’d assume they’re close enough I could make something happen. I’ve got to do more research, but got to know the bell housings are swappable
