Since my A4 let go, well the front pump seal did, i'm going to say the hell with it, and convert to a 5spd. i have the 5spd and manaul tcase to use, do i need to swap in a 5spd ECU or is my auto ECU going to be fine?

I would suggest getting the 5 speed computer and also the transmission wiring harness for the 5 speed.

this is how Ford would do it from the factory.
If you do not you will have a CEL

This has been covered on this forum MANY times, you can try a search

a 93 Ex has no EGR, so the computer is different from a 91-92 and a 94.
You will want a 93 5 speed computer ONLY

thank you sir. i tried a search, but didnt find what i was looking for.. i suck at searches.
the 5spd / tcase assembly wil be coming off my 'donor' truck, TK5, 1350 manual.. so i should be able to salvage just about everything i need. driveshafts, wiring etc.
if i am using a TK5 off of a 2.8, would i need to get a 4.0 flexplate with a 2.8 clutch, or all 4.0 clutch parts?

I don't know how 1st gen's work....but you could always have a custom chip made by one of the various companies. That's the route I took.

I personally would not trust the Toyo Kogo behind a 4.0L

The 1350 T case you will need the front driveshaft, the rear you can use fomr the Exploder

there are a couple of simple wiring changes to be made in the trans harness, or you can use the harness from the donor and it will make the changes for you.

If your first seach fails, try try again. Mix your words around, use new words, etc.

You will use the 2.8L clutch parts, which is SMALLER then the 4.0L, but the TK slave cyl will only work with the 2.8L clutch I believe.

IMO NOT a good idea, not alot of fun to bolt this all up only to have to take it apart again when you find out its not working or holding up behind the 4.0l

the Mitusbishi 5 speed was the better of the 3, the Toyo was the WEAKEST.

hmm.. well maybe i wont then. i just need the truck back on the road asap. i am not about to put that a4 back in there. this is a4 #4 for me, and they have all crapped out. i have a line on a 5.0/aod combo i can get for a really good price, with all the parts off the donor car i need. but i dont really have the time to swap all that over.
how long does a 5.0 swap usually take if you have all your ducks in a row parts wise? (having mounts, oil pan etc) i'm not horribly concerned if it is just 2wd for the time being, thats fine. its just a commuter truck for now. so i wont screw with the transfer case adapter and the like.
wow, i'm hyjacking my own thread :D

as for the chip mentioned earlier, i could just get SCT to send me the base file for my COW1 ECU, and i can burn my own.. i never thought of that..

If you are crunched for time you can deal with a check engine light for a while until you can replace the PCM.

A 5.0L conversion is ALOT more involved then a 5 speed conversion, plan on MONTHS.

I did my 5 speed to auto conversion in 3 days.
It can be done over a weekend as long as you have all the parts you need.

yeah, thats what i thought. man.. there isnt going to be a quick solution to this that doesnt involve the a4..

hahaha the A4LD has not been a solution for you yet, just a headache.

there are FEW people I trust to build one, but if you do get one built by them, they are good as new. If you wanted to go that route I cna point you in the right direction (I am guessing however you are fed up)

It is a good trans when built properly, though you wont find me using another in my rig(s)

I take it the C5 is not an option for you?

i wish it was. i'd really like to keep my OD
whats the final ratio in a c5, 1:1?

would that tranny hold up to any good sized trailer towing?

the C5 can be built using C4 parts and will hold up behind a 350 hp V8 and towing, yes.

The C4 is a STOUT trans when built, cheap to build, and is available with a reverse manual valve body.

Most offroad trucks who are tired of the A4LD have gone with a C5/4
