I am currently replacing the head unit on my 99 Mountaineer and I am going to hook up the factory amp using the wiring diagram and guidence from those who have....I was talking to a repair shop that does car audio and they told me that you can't use the factory sub amp because it is 6V and I just said "huh?" but when I look at the shop manual it does say "6V battery" but as far as I can tell, it is running at 12.....

Could someone clarify that for me?

Thanks

as far as I know everything powered in your truck (everything) is 12V.
But maybe I am wrong when it comes to this audio system?
Not sure how you would drop it down to 6 volts or why??

Maybe they were talking about OHM's?

I agree, but the diagram does state "6V batt"

must be a FORD thing

does this 6v power wire come from the factory head unit?

I think this 6v you guys are reffering to is the remote wire that turns the amp on and off.... I stumbled upon it when I tried to hook up and after market amp to the stock head unit. I thought I was lucky cuz I didnt have to run a remote wire to the trunk. But when I hooked it all up my amps did not work. I tested the remote wire and the multimeter was showing 6volts.

Yes the 6volts comes from the factory head unit. Hope this helps.

so then you can use the factory amp if you supply it with 6 volts, I wonder if the normal 12 would hurt it :)
hehehe

I also vote for ditching the factory amp though, it works well withtehe factory sub, but thats about it.

410Fortune,
The amps will work with a 12 volt remote wire. In my 94X I had an after market deck hooked up with the factory amps for a while. And they worked. I didn't realize the remote wire was 6volts until I put the OEM deck back in with an after market amp. To date the factory amp that came in my explorer is in my Girl friends car (12volt remote) running her highs, and it still works.

yes, the 12volt signal will be fine.

The "6V batt" comes from the battery, not the head unit.
I will scan the document and post it.

either there is a voltage devider somewhere in the circuit, or "6v batt" mean that 6 volts is the minimum accetpable input voltage. I am betting on the second.
