I have a 2004 Explorer. I order new speakers and a deck this week. I got the deck and front speakers from Crutchfield. I got the rear speakers from a local box store. Front and rear speakers are Focal. I took the rear door panel off and opened up the speakers. I thought the speakers looked big. Sure enough, they were. They ordered me 6x9's. Can these fit with some cutting on the door? Has anyone done this? Thoughts?

Thanks
Eric

Personally I go painfully out of my way to prevent cutting wires/sheet metal etc. because someone else is probably going to end up with it, and I want to be able to return to stock if need be.

Thanks guys. I checked out that link. I am wondering if that adaptor would work?

I would just return them and get 5x7/6x8's. You said you got them locally, right?

6x9 vs 5x7 won't gain any significant output. If you bought them locally, exchange them...

Personally I always steer my audio customers far away from oval speakers as possible. a 5x7 adapter for 5.25" or 6.5" components is the best option.

sound Quality of the the oval will always be a compromise to a comparable round speaker.

I 2nd the round speaker over the ovals.

Huge dif in sound. The bass hits harder, the mids are crisper, and with the addition of a separate tweeter, the highs are clearer. I replaced the fronts with 6.5 using an adapter plate, and also used the adapters for the rears using 5.25" rounds.

I got all 4 adapter plates for less than $20 locally at a car audio shop.

I got a hold of the saleman (finally) He said he was going to get the right speakers. I believe 5x7's? They will be in the rear doors. I have the Focal components in the front doors.
Thanks guys
Eric

I'm a little late to this post but I did a similar thing, except it was the front doors. However, the backs would be the same. with a hammer and a hacksaw it is easy to modify the door without wrecking anything, you just have to cut 2 grooves where the speaker is to big and beat it back with a hammer. Only prob I had was I didn't want to modify it tons so the speakers didn't sit in the doors totally flat, they stuck out a small bit. So It didn't make a seal but man those 6x9 kickers sound good.

the front and rear speakers are both 6x8s
