I like the mama dog
It's great to see children going hunting in learning skills like that it's almost lost to us

Thank you, she’s really the best dog I’ve got. Yes sir, that’s why I’m teaching all of my kids to hunt. Well as they start getting old enough to go I will. My dad didn’t hunt, he only fished. I learned from my big brother a family friend and my uncle. My kids will at least learn it and they can make the choice of whether they will keep hunting or not. It’s an addiction to me!

I’m back!
Been doing lots of work to the truck. I’ll have to go back through the thread and see where I left off and try to remember what I’ve done.
Been doing a fair amount of hunting and I average around 250 miles per trip. I’ve tweaked a lot of stuff and I just ordered add a leafs to compensate for the weight of the dogs. Might even add another leaf or two along with retainer straps.

Just installed some lights on the headache rack to help find and read tracks in the snow. I’m a fan of the Harbor Freight lights and wiring kits.

I have a fair amount of stuff I still want to do to it. Gonna have to start working on the wife’s truck soon though. I’ve been neglecting it.

Finally got around to installing AAL’s. I went withSuperLifts from Summit because they were $77 plus shipping. I added a couple bulk head fittings in anticipation of buying a winch to mount on a slider to use in the front or rear and got free shipping.

I’ve been trying to hunt as much as I can this winter. I managed to get the ranger big stuck that day. Buried to the frame in a 4 foot snow drift. Luckily I had my trusty hi lift jack. I jacked it up and packed snow under the tires then dug the snow out from under the axles. I was then able to start rocking it back and forth to make a track until I was able to back out. It took a while… I then got lucky and treed a real good tom. My youngest daughter got to go with me and experience her first lion tree. The dogs are really turning on and hunting together well.

Yes sir, he is a beautiful animal and I will be honoring him by displaying him in my home and I am absolutely eating him!

Here are a couple pictures from yesterday. The wife and I process all of our game animals at home. We treated ourselves to the filet minion while cutting and vacuum sealing the meat. We vacuum seal meat because it preserves it longer than butcher paper.
If you see that measuring cup at the top right corner of the cutting board, that’s the discard pile that’s the only thing that got thrown away. The rest of the trimmings will be cooked to feed to the hounds when it’s cold and the raw bones will be fed to them to help their teeth. We strive to not waste anything if we can help it.

Great I love seeing this

My grandma. deep deep snow would be proud

That’s a big lion!! How much did it weigh? So far the largest we have seen here is 185#! Once they took him out a bunch of smaller ones (but still big cats) moved into the area
We saw 4 of them last year! We have cats and wolves and bears as apex predators here

Thank you, I don’t know how much you know about hunting, but hunting is heavily regulated. We only harvest around 125 lions in Nevada each year. The state is divided into several hundred game management units. The Department Of Wildlife has set quotas for each unit on how many males or females are allowed to be harvested from each unit. If the female quota is reached before the male quota then the unit is closed for the rest of the season so the local population isn’t over hunted. We have to check in daily, prior to hunting to see if any units are closed for the season. I spoke with the biologist on Friday. He said our state wide population is extremely healthy and exactly where it should be. So, lion hunters are all doing exactly what the biologists want us to do.

I don’t follow on the grandma part…

Yes the snow was too deep for me, up there in the pass.

Thank you! He was above average for the state but not near the biggest ever taken. He was 167 pounds and 7 foot 9” long from nose to tip of the tail. The biologist believes he was around 3 maybe 4 years old.
Once a big dominant tom is removed, it opens the area up for younger toms who get displaced from where they were raised. Those big toms will actually learn to hunt down and kill all the younger toms that come into their range. They will also seek out any kittens and kill them also because their mother will come back into heat faster, for him to breed. It doesn’t matter if they’re his kittens or not, he’ll kill them anyways.

My grandma's name is deep deep snow
She's 88 year old native American woman
Oh, okay. I understand now. Do you know why her parents gave her the name? I assume she was born in the winter when it was a heavy snow year.

Yep you got it she is Cherokee

I splurged and bought a 12k Harbor Freight winch with a hitch mount. Then I swapped front bumpers. I ended up having to cut the old receiver off, then build a new one to fit the hitch mount. I used it the first day I went out lol. Only had to pull myself about 2 foot, but that 2 foot saved me lots of digging! I didn’t get any pictures of winching but here are a couple bumper pictures and one of my dogs Buck. He just finished trying to trail a 30 hour old tom track that he didn’t have a chance in hell of treeing. But the more I let him work those old tracks, the better he will get. Maybe some day he will be good enough to trail that old of a track and tree them!

I forgot to update my thread! So this was back in February maybe March I think. So basically the bottom of this creek was super soft but the banks were ice so I couldn’t get traction to get out.

Oh I forgot to mention, the Houndrunner is performing Daily Driver duties this summer. I had a lady pull out in front of me, the end of May. Totaled my F350 and I haven’t replaced it yet. So it’s getting 340 miles a week put on it, plus whatever I drive to go hunting. It’s doing pretty good and is getting 14-17 mpg depending on the wind. Sometimes I get heavy head winds coming down off the Sierra Nevadas on my way to work. That really kills the mpg’s.

I finally wired up the gang switch and threw some chincy labels on. The kids will probably pick them off the first time they go hunting with me again lol. But maybe it’ll give me enough time to memorize them before they do. Also added 2- double port USB chargers.

Also finally broke the spare tire off the bead and drained out the water from when I pupped it off the bead in the snow. There was a solid cup, to cup and a quarter in there.View attachment 117420View attachment 117421View attachment 117422

Since the last post, I have been driving the hell outta the truck. A couple of the injectors started sticking again and the fuel mileage dropped off again. I tried two cans of sea foam and then two cans of Berryman’s injector cleaner. Nothin worked. So I pulled the intake and replaced all 3 passenger side injectors with spares that I have. I made sure to clean them again before I put them in.
I also pulled the exhaust from down stream of the cat and replaced it with the same from my parts truck. I had a bunch of leaks and it rattled like hell. It started up much better and was a little bit quieter so I’m gonna call it a win!
I did find out that the radiator tanks are both leaking though, so that sucks. The passenger side has about a 5” crack.
