Hello. New here and like the site alot. Ok I have a 91 exp. It has automatic locking hubs. It's been clunking really bad what seems to be in the drivers side. I tore the auto hub apart and saw nothing broke or worn. About three different times now. I also pulled the front axle out and replaced the u-joints. The spindle teeth were in fine shape. Am I overlooking something? Is there anything else that could be causing the clunk. It's almost binding up but doesn't stop the tire. It happens about every 10 feet. I want to change over to manual hubs but want to make sure the hub is the problem. Any help would be great. Thanks.

sorta sounds like the hub bearings are shot and the hubs are trying to engage, if so check this site out http://www.explorerforum.com/Singleton/exp.html scroll down to "Hubs, Diffs, and Transfer Case" and read the posts covering "The 4wd System "
I think a lot of us first gen owners have done these repairs.
