That seems high if you ask me

I beleive you need a new front carrier, I think the split is 3.55/3.73.

Figure between $250-$500 each axle for labor. (Front end is a PITA)

Gears average $175-$200 a pair new

Install kits are about $90 an axle.

Shop supplies (gear oil & misc) $100

I think I went to these guys when I regeared to 4.56:
http://www.rockvillespeed.com/

Its cheaper if you remove the axles from the vehicle and bring it to them.

yeah i bet..but im not gunna be able to just give them the axles for abench job..im a student..and need the truck..but 3k just seems like too much..and i kno i cant pay it..i need to kno if i shouldnt let them do it..and.. what is this "split" your talkin about ..and why the front carrier not the rear..i want to kno a lil more about wha tim saying when i talk to this guy again..thank you ahgain for your speedy response..i will be tlakin to him first thing monday morning

While searching I found http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140414&highlight=d35+carrier+break

Seems like there really isn't a brake. If there was a junkyard carrier from a 1st gen wouldn't be anymore than $50-$100. If they want $600 for a carrier and its not an ARB air locker thats a rip.

I would buy all the gear and install parts online then take them to a shop to get them installed to try and save money. If you do enough research you can find some good deals.

I'd get the tools needed and do it myself.. I believe someone posted a tutorial on how to do gear changes on the site.

But if that is not an option. There is Appalachian offroad in Westminster, MD.. (410) 848-6922

There's a few other shops that I can't think the names of

are u suggestin appalchian or somethin? i got it at my buddies shop actually..and still im not gettin a good deal lol..his dad is a trans specialist..can i will try the shop you suggested i suppose and get an estimate..can i ask the reason you referred them? is it just becuase u live in the area..?

thansk again

They do alot of work for various members of a site I frequent. Needless to say the amount you were quoted is quite high even if it includes the ring & pinion and new carrier if needed.

I think the new carrier sounds like bull

You dont need one unless you old one is broken, because there is no carrier split for d35's/8.8's

A carrier split it when you use lower gears, the ring gear changes in thickness to accommodate opposite changes in the pinion. This also dictates how thick the carrier is in some spots. Some differentals have them, others use the same carrier for all gears.

I would look around, or ask you why the price is what it is.

but dana 35 reverse cut gears are very expensive so that will make the cost slightly higher.

so for both the frotn and rear diff i will NOT need a diff carrier?..and this is becuase ford boasts a no brake axle right? i heard this before..i want to know wht to say to this guy to put him in his place..

I used Randys Ring&pinion for my Lock-Rights and 4:88's(I had to buy a new carrier for the rear since it was LS) and It was around 900 for everything(if I remember correctly) and only another 800 to have them installed. I think the quotes you got are inflated......................... BADLY....
The only way it should cost that much is, if they are suppling all the parts. The carrier shouldn't be that high because they have to remove it anyway to install the new ring gear. Sounds to me like the person you talked to doesn't really want to do it(hence the inflated price)....:thumbdwn:

they are supplying ALL the parts..gears and all..but i feel liek that price is rediculous..i guess ill try taking it somewher it else..

ok i basicaly took all of this info..and confronted this guy..he basically couldnt lower his number..eh defended himself well but i dont think everything he said was necessary..liek the gears he was insisting on and reason he insisted on them (us strange) also, he insisted i would need a new carrier for both diffs, and i would need a posi unit for the rear...his labor quote was onff the charts..and i picked up the explorer today..paid him 50 bux for the road test and all and took it home..

the main thing i had on him was..thanks to blee..i was referred to a 4x4 shop nearby and i will be takin it ther next week..unfortunately i have to wait over a week to get them done, but its going to cost les than half the original quote..at $1437 ..the wait is well worth it..

thansk for everybodys help
-chris

$1437 <-- thats sounds a lot better for all the hardware (gears, install kit) and labor.

Cool what shop did you get a referral to? Hopefully not that 4x4 shop in Glen Burnie.. can't remember the name..

no blee i went to the westminster shop..appalachian...the one you gave me the number for..and yes that $1437 includes everything for open units and yukon gears.. does that sound good to ya'll?...

on another note..my buddy insists that he is right and i am wrong and that i not only dont need the gears..but that if i were to regear i would never need anything over 4.10...could anybody reply breifly why it is necessary and/or things that would be affected negatively by notgearing and runnin 35s..apparently im "waisting my time and money, and with my engine mods ill be fine" lol..thanks again guys

I'm guessing that since he's a tranny shop, he doesn't want you to regear so you'll F up your tranny so he can charge you up the ass to fix that too. I'd stop going to your buddy's shop.

I'd jump on it cause the going rate is probably close to $1000 per axle normally. They TTB requires the entire TTB to be removed or atleast from what I can gather to do a gear swap.

Interesting advice, seems like someone thinks has to many "friends" who are out to get him.

Its also possible that the guy just has his own opinion and doesn't think its needed. I know plenty of people who told me that 5.13's were going to be stupid low and that I would hate them, but I went with another friends recommendation and got them and they are awesome, even a little high.
