I have a 1993 explorer that runs great. The problem is when i push the 4 wheel button on the dash it doesnt go into 4 wheel drive. The button doesnt even light up. it worked up til a couple weeks ago when i towed my boat off of a ramp. Any suggestions or possibilities?

Welcome to the site... Take a peek at the Shift motor thread for lots of info and pics. This topic has been discussed numerous times and you should be able to find lots of info using the search feature.. If you're still having problems post back and we'll help you out.

install some manual hubs. save yourself some trouble

I agree manual hubs are very durable (compared with autohubs), but they have Zero to do with being able to shift into 4x4.

Mine was doing the same thing.I looked at the shift motor rebuild thread and fixed mine. The little plastic bushing was mush.I put a piece of fuel line on the screw, put it back together and everything works fine.

ok folks i put a rebuilt trans case shift in and still nothing!

no lights on the dash and no shifting into 4x4?

there is a clicking noise from the left side rear quarterpanel in the 4x4 controller area

is there a next step i can try?

update:::::

i loosened the 4 nuts and it worked! no 4 wheel low but i do have 4 wheel high and it lights on the dash...
isnt that strange? could it have been binded?
now i have it just barely tightened could it vibrate loose and then off?

one of my few shots of the 1st generation explorer's transfer case (BW-1354 electric shift - shift rod pointing to 4LO position)

If you meant that you put a rebuilt transfer case in:

did the rebuilt transfer case came with its own shift motor?
or did you reuse the one from your old one?

if the rebuilt transfer case came with its own shift motor
, and because this rebuilt transfer is exhibiting the same symptoms as the first transfer case, i think the problem is electrical - not a problem of the transfer case.

I think the shift motors (uv had two of them on two transfer cases) are not getting enough power to turn the shift rod to the proper positions. this is rare as the transfer case is hardly shifted but wire corrosion does happen with age so who knows.

if you reused the shift motor from the old transfer case, then its the shift motor that was and is misbehaving.

---------------------------------------------
If you meant that you put a rebuilt shift motor in: how is the fluid level of the transfer case? the fluid in the transfer case lubricates the shift fork assembly and the planetary gears when they need to be moved to the different configurations (2HI, 4LO, 4HI).

if the fluid level is fine, then the problem is either the motor is not getting enough power (as mentioned above), or the transfer case itself is mechanically ill. the electrical part rarely happens because the transfer case is not shifted very often. most of the time it is the latter - a mechanical problem. i have never cracked the BW-1354 so I cant really tell you whats going on. I could make a few guesses but they are just guesses and i dont want to lead u down the wrong path.

it could very well do that.

hey IZwhack FYI next time instead of cutting the wire, take the big ssquare plug apart, take the red keeper out, and pull the pin. :P

Little trick I learned over the years....my wire is cut too! hahaha

i am your wife. ahah but actually it was the junk yard that cut the wire - i recieved it like that.

Check out the Transfer case section in the explorer maint link in my sig.. It details how to use a meter to test the shift motor wiring harness for correct continuity. Also check out post #9 in Shift motor thread.

I put a rebuilt shift motor on the transfer case...

its tight but not supertight...lol

i read on one of the threads about the motor being tilted so i just loosened it a bit and it worked. Im have to check the case fluid in the morning...
