After being run my 4.0 litre won't start. It spits and sputters. Engine is hot. It seems as if there is no fuel. SUV sits for about two hours and it will start and run fine. There doesn't seem to be a smell of fuel.

Check the fuel pressure at the rail. Should be 35-45psi. If you don't have a guage, push in on the valve with a screwdriver or something and observe(with the key on.) Put a rag there so you don't make a mess. WATCH your eyes. It should squirt out good and strong not just trickle. Keep us posted. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Peace

Fisrt check the fuel pump fuse and relay, very common problem with Gen I's as they get older.

You can listen for the fuel pump when you turn the key to on, if you dont hear it prime (back of the truck) for about 2 seconds, then you found your problem. Usually the relay or the fuse are the cause.

You can also search for this, it has been covered a billion times, once you know if the fuel pump is the issue.
