Aren't those dangerous? I mean is the light still red or is it clear like the headlights?

I dont think they are dangerous as long as you put a RED bulb inside...Im going to put the LED red bulbs in em.

Will these taillights fit a 1997 Explorer Sport? I mean does it matter if it is a sport?

On all years but '01 (and beyond), the tails on the Sports are the same as the 4-doors (for the same model years). 91-94, 95-97 and 98-00 are the different tail designs and are interchangeable within those series.

Im interested in getting a set of these lenses. Are they actually legal for normal street use? I notice they have a reflector on them. Is this considered adaquate? Please advise...Thanks!

If you're using red bulbs (or ambers for the flashers), I can't see why not. Many manufacturers (i.e. Lexus SUV) have clear tails.

Yes, but there are red reflectors in the rear bumper on the Lexus. That may be how they get away with it? Just my opinion though.

I found out that these are actually illegal...atleast here in California, even with red bulbus you must have a red reflector.

They MAY have all the things a Lexus taillight does (i.e. red bulbs, reflectors, etc.), but if they don't carry a D.O.T. approval, they're NOT legal :( (and to my knowledge, these aren't D.O.T. approved. No amount of pleading or excuses will change the opinion of the court or simply a picky cop that pulls you over.

Also... beware. If you're rearended and you have illegal tails on your car, you're automatically at fault if the police notice  , whether the accident was your "fault" or not. Sucks, but thats just the way it is...

Don't get me wrong, I love these taillights... but once I knew the risks it just didn't seem worth it.

Just out of curiosity, what if you put a small length of red reflective tape over the reflector areas of these taillights. Would that make them more appropriate? At least there is a red marking of some kind on the rear of the vehicle. Just a though?
