Usually when the OD light flashes you're to late... Take it to a tranny shop and see what they say...

BTW, please don't post in ALL CAPS on the explorer board...

does it shift ok? Try unplugging the battery for 20 minutes..they try again..that gave me an extra 7,000 on my 95's trans before the light came back.
Was $2500 for a factory rebuilt trans..

Mine has been flashing on and off for the past three weeks, I have asked a ford to check it but they keep telling me to take an appointment but that’s useless as every time I go for the appointment its not flashing. Unfortunately from what I have learnt on the net is could be a million different things from a bad sensors to a bust trans. By the way when the light flashes you will probably notice that it shifts harder and there is a clunk, this is apparently normal as the trans is in defense mode. Do a search in the under hood forum there is some info in there. The only symptoms I have noticed other than the defense mode is that at 70 MPH my revs are about 400rpm high than when it not flashing.

Sorry I couldn’t help.

Regards
Arran

Sounds like your overdrive is just going out. If at 70 MPH the RPM is 400 higher it may just be that you are not shifting into overdrive.

That’s what i thought but when i hit the button the rpm go up to around 3400rpm so it seems to be shifting down.

MR BOND

With the slightly higher RPM, it sounds to me like your torque convertor is not locking up.

A Ford dealership should be able to scan the codes even if the light is not on at the moment. They are stored for so many key on-key off cycles.

BTW, shouldn't you be driving an Aston-Martin Vanquish? :D

Oh yeah, this isn't really a 911 problem so I'm moving it.

Hey Yob_Yehnon, I wish man.

I will take the ex to a stealership and try to get the codes and then post.

thanks
Arran

Just went through the same problem twice

I had my tranny rebuilt 10/16/02 and a week later the overdrive light started flashing and I lost OD. They said it was a seal that came loose/flipped and also that the sensor was bad. A year later with less than 10 days and less than 500 miles on the warranty the same thing happened again with the seal. They had to pull the tranny, replace the sensor and seal and fix some other parts that were damaged in the process.

I would have a tranny shop check it out asap. If its a constant thing, it probably won't get any better by itself and you don't want the damage to get worse.

Going to take it in next week after i get my well-deserved paycheck, as I have no idea how much there going to steal from me just to pull the codes.

This kinda sucks as i just spent most my hard earned cash buying the ex and now I’m going to most probable have to rebuild the trans.

And you guys over the pond say its expensive well in Switzerland i reckon I’m going to have to ad at least 2000 USD to the howl operation . Parts way more expensive and labor ridiculously expensive. There goes my Xmas bonus.

OD light flashing...

The dealer (if you can't get good service from one, fire him and find a dealer that cares about your problem) should be able to pull codes from the Powertrain Control Module.

On a hunch I'm thinking it may be that your torque converter lock-up is not functioning.

To check TC lock-up or lack thereof, drive at around 50 MPH on flat level ground. While watching the tach, tap the brake. You should see the tach register 100-200 extra rpm and then return to lower rpm if you have kept accelerator position steady. If you see no change in rpm, your TC is not in lock-up mode.

This is the PCM's way of telling the lockup that it's no longer needed because you are slowing down....

Good luck...

Thanks Stilbo, i will give it a try and let you know.

Stilbo,

It would seem that you may be correct in assuming its my torque converter lock up as i did the test you recommended and when the trans is working correctly it does move up a couple hundred rpms. However when the light is flashing it does not. I was thinking that maybe it has to do with the Cripple mode the trans goes into when there is a problem however this morning i noticed that the light was going to start blinking again so i tried the test before it did and the rpms didn’t move. Is this an easy fix or a major overhaul. Also can i heart the trans by driving it like that. Thanks alot for your help.

Thanks
Arran

My 95 has been doing this for over 4 years. Whenever I take it off-road and drive very slow at higher altitudes, the light comes on. It definitely is the converter lockup.

Disconnecting the battery for about 20 minutes resets it.

Started at about 40000 miles, I now have over 80000 on the trans. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
