does it shift ok? Try unplugging the battery for 20 minutes..they try again..that gave me an extra 7,000 on my 95's trans before the light came back.
Was $2500 for a factory rebuilt trans..
Mine has been flashing on and off for the past three weeks, I have asked a ford to check it but they keep telling me to take an appointment but that’s useless as every time I go for the appointment its not flashing. Unfortunately from what I have learnt on the net is could be a million different things from a bad sensors to a bust trans. By the way when the light flashes you will probably notice that it shifts harder and there is a clunk, this is apparently normal as the trans is in defense mode. Do a search in the under hood forum there is some info in there. The only symptoms I have noticed other than the defense mode is that at 70 MPH my revs are about 400rpm high than when it not flashing.
I had my tranny rebuilt 10/16/02 and a week later the overdrive light started flashing and I lost OD. They said it was a seal that came loose/flipped and also that the sensor was bad. A year later with less than 10 days and less than 500 miles on the warranty the same thing happened again with the seal. They had to pull the tranny, replace the sensor and seal and fix some other parts that were damaged in the process.
I would have a tranny shop check it out asap. If its a constant thing, it probably won't get any better by itself and you don't want the damage to get worse.
Going to take it in next week after i get my well-deserved paycheck, as I have no idea how much there going to steal from me just to pull the codes.
This kinda sucks as i just spent most my hard earned cash buying the ex and now I’m going to most probable have to rebuild the trans.
And you guys over the pond say its expensive well in Switzerland i reckon I’m going to have to ad at least 2000 USD to the howl operation . Parts way more expensive and labor ridiculously expensive. There goes my Xmas bonus.
The dealer (if you can't get good service from one, fire him and find a dealer that cares about your problem) should be able to pull codes from the Powertrain Control Module.
On a hunch I'm thinking it may be that your torque converter lock-up is not functioning.
To check TC lock-up or lack thereof, drive at around 50 MPH on flat level ground. While watching the tach, tap the brake. You should see the tach register 100-200 extra rpm and then return to lower rpm if you have kept accelerator position steady. If you see no change in rpm, your TC is not in lock-up mode.
This is the PCM's way of telling the lockup that it's no longer needed because you are slowing down....
It would seem that you may be correct in assuming its my torque converter lock up as i did the test you recommended and when the trans is working correctly it does move up a couple hundred rpms. However when the light is flashing it does not. I was thinking that maybe it has to do with the Cripple mode the trans goes into when there is a problem however this morning i noticed that the light was going to start blinking again so i tried the test before it did and the rpms didn’t move. Is this an easy fix or a major overhaul. Also can i heart the trans by driving it like that. Thanks alot for your help.
My 95 has been doing this for over 4 years. Whenever I take it off-road and drive very slow at higher altitudes, the light comes on. It definitely is the converter lockup.
Disconnecting the battery for about 20 minutes resets it.
Started at about 40000 miles, I now have over 80000 on the trans. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
