Ok, so I have been having some issues with the 95 explorer sport that i recently bought.

First I bought it being told it needed a starter and a flexplate. Bought both used, had the starter tested so I knew it was good before putting it in. Finally got the old one removed and it was siezed up, and tested bad. Checked the flex plate and it looked good. no grind marks, turned fine with no obvious breaks in it. So i decided not to worry about it. New(used) starter went it, and I got it to turn over the motor when I jumped the terminals, but it would not start the truck. I knew fuel was good cause I had replaced the fuel pump when the PO had it. Checked relay and fuses anyways. All good.

So upon reading another couple threads, i read that some people have had issues with the Crank Position Sensor when it would turn over but not fire. So I tapped on that, as well as re-seated most of the sensor connections on the top of the motor.

The one thing I didn't do was replace the one Spark plug wire that looked corroded. Oh, and I also changed the oil, but found no indication of metal in it. And with the face that the motor turned over without issue or noise, leads me to believe that it is fine.

Now, After havin done all this, and charging the battery, I finally got to test it. It started, and maintained running, but it ran really rough and loud, almost sounding like a spun bearing, but not quite, and it stayed running for about 3-5 min without help (more throttle) and it didn't sieze up at all, so I figured that it probably isn't a spun bearing.

So what could it be? My guess would be a misfire caused by the plug wire, which is now replaced, but can't test due to the starter not engaging again. other guess would be the flexplate let go, but would that cause it to run rough and a vibration? The truck was not driven, just sat there and idled.

Any help or insight is greatly appretiated.

Bump. Anyone got any ideas?

Old gas?

Had the vehicle been sitting for a long time before you bought it? If so, the fuel in the tank may be bad. You may want to drain the tank and replace the fuel filter.

I suggest that you clean the MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner and also clean the IAC valve.

The truck had not been sitting too long. Maybe 2 weeks before I got it. I replaced the fuel pump and checked the tank while in there and everything was good about a month before I got it.

The truck has sat here for about a month and a half since getting it.

could be many things (maf iac plugs..)

id say pull plugs and give a tune up if that doesnt work u gotta test other stuff

Alright. I'll pull the plugs and see what they look like when the weather is more favorable. We are down past the teens now with horrible wind, so it's a pain. Will also do a compression check.

Also, need to figure out why the starter is just spinning now. Could the noise I heard have been the Flywheel finally disintegrating, even though it checked out fine when I had the starter off before?

So here is the order of things I am going to check, please let me know if something should be done before or after, or if something should be added.

1) Pull starter and check flywheel and starter.
2) Pull plugs and check/replace (should NGK TL55 plugs be fine? ) Wires already replaced after test.
3) Clean MAF and IAC (is there a link to a how to on these? )
4) Replace crank sensor (tapping on this got it starting before, so my guess is that it's on the way out
5) ???
6) sell truck if nothing else works (probably won't do this. there is always a solution.)

Thanks for the help so far. Hopefully this week the weather will be bearable. If not, i will try and get the garage clean enough to get it in.

Read the codes

Why not read the diagnostic trouble codes to see if they provide some insight?

I would perform the normal maintenance tasks when purchasing a vehicle of unknown care. Change the spark plugs and wires, replace the air and fuel filters, clean the MAF sensor and IAC valve, add fuel injector cleaner to the fuel tank. Then clear the old DTCs with a reader or with the battery.

After that if it still runs poorly I would check for new DTCs. If none are set then I would perform the MAF Sensor Test Procedure. I believe in testing special components (such as the CKP sensor) before replacing them.

I will check the DTC codes once I figure out how to do it. When it was running, I don't remember an engine light.

In looking up what running a cylinder down would be like, it seems plausible that that might be the issue, expecially with the plug wire I removed that was green on one side. Will have to pull and change the plugs when I get a chance just to be safe.

Is there a way to test the ignition coil to see if it is good? I have one that I got for a spare, but the connector is different (faces up instead of towards pass)

The starter seems to be my big issue right now. Hopefully I can get that figured out so I can move on to diagnosing the rest of this.

Ignition tester

Harbor Freight sells an inline ignition tester for $6. Sometimes they're on sale for $4. You attach it to the spark plug so you're checking the ignition coil and the associated wire. They're a very useful device!

You can probably purchase something similar at Advance Auto, AutoZone or O'Reilly's, etc.

When you get your engine running you can go to your local Advance Auto and they will read your OBD codes. Make sure and write down the actual numbers and then post them. Don't buy a part based on the code until you are fairly certain its bad. The codes do not always identify the failed component.

I actually bought one of those the last time I was there. I have not used it yet though. The wire that was bad has since been replaced.

As for the codes, being a 95 it is OBD1, and autozone cannot read the codes on OBD1 vehicles.
