I've had this leak for a while near the oil filter and the entire front. I've sprayed the area down with Gunk a few times and couldn't find the leak. I definitely think its oil thats leaking not only because it is near the oil filter, but also because my oil pressure gauge is constantly low and I just changed the oil 150 mi ago. Any other suggestions of what else the leak could be or where it is coming from would be helpful.

Right above that area on driver side of front timing cover is the oil sending unit.

Also--the "oil cooler" or filter mount can develop a leak where it joins the block.

And just FYI the dash oil pressure gauge is nothing more than a dummy light in gauge format.

im still amazed at how ford can call a 2 inch extended oil filter housing an 'oil cooler' and i know i know it runs underneath the water pump but i dont see how it helps out all that much. is it possible his leak is coming from the timing cover itself? or a crank or cam seal within the timing cover? just a thought.

There is a small heat exchange area inside it--the engine coolant flows through it.

most likely source of your leak is the filter or filter/cooler assembly as JTsmith stated.

The lower radiator hose runs through the oil filter mount, its a very efficient way to cool the oil in your V8, Ford was smart when they had to re-locate the filter on the 5.0l to stuff it in a Gen II explorer if you ask me its a great addition

410 wher in colorado do you live?

Why?
Just curious :)

I checked it out yesterday and think I have to change the oil pressure sensor. Does anyone know of an easy way to get to it on a 96' 5.0? The Haynes manual doesn't help at all with this.
