My 96 5.0 has roughly 150k on it and still runs strong. Yesterday, it did something weird while I was braking for a light. The truck was slowing down but I could feel the engine was still revving, like I was braking with my left foot but holding the gas with my right. Anyway, thinking the throttle might be stuck, I quickly put in neutral and all felt normal. After the light changed, I put it back in Drive and the event hasn't repeated. I am thinking the throttle cable or linkage got stuck. I just came back from camping and power washed the truck. I wonder if getting something wet would make this happen. Is there a way to lube this up or am I better off just changing the throttle cable?

It could be the cable, or a number of things. Does the check engine light turn on when you switch the key to on? It should. Does the check engine light remain on or blink at you while driving?

I had my accelerator stick once... coming up to a stop light, whoo. Kind of intense :)
shifted in to neutral and RPMs probably redlined before I shut it off.
a slight tug on the pedal and it came loose.

after I got home I either wd-40'ed or used some 3-in-1 oil at the engine compartment side, on both the cable (what I could get, of course) and the butterfly valve spring and whatnot.

No light.

I was going to do just that. I would like to replace the cable just as a precaution but I cannot find a part number or anyone who sells it. Any ideas?

check with Torrie at fastpartsnetwork.com
he may be able to at least get you a part number, but it appears that part has been discontinued?

throttle cable, explorer, mountaineer, 5.0l
96-97 $47.28 $39.72

Fuel system - Fuel supply - Throttle cable This item is Discontinued.

same thing for the 1998-2001 5.0's also.

So your check engine light never turns on? even when you first turn on the key?

Sorry, yes it comes on with the key in the ON position, goes off when the truck starts and stays off.

I just sent them an email, maybe I can get a part number. In the meantime, I will lube the hell out of it and hope it fixes the problem.
