I have a 1998 ford explorer xlt V6 SOHC with a sticking throttle problem, sometimes when you first start it will idle fine then rev up to 1500 rpm and stay there until you cut it off, other times while driving it will stick ( can tell because car doesn't shift as well) and will keep up until you put it in park and cut it off. Sometimes will rev all the way up to 2500 rpm. Now it has cut the check engine light on but I have taken it to a couple different places and they can't find a code. Could it be the throttle position sensor or something else?

If it is the tps how do you change it?

thanks.

This thread will help you to troubleshoot the tps, as it shows correct voltages and how to read them.

I will mention I had a failed TPS causing poor transmission-with no code. However, it would be a huge help to find a code reader which will read your trouble code.

Try again, elsewhere. In our area autozone will hook a scanner up free of charge. Be sure to write down the complete code. Ignore the description. Do not let them sell you anything unless it is indeed a TPS code, and they have a motorcraft brand TPS in stock.

Post the trouble codes when you get a chance.

I'm not up on the 1999 sohc, BUT IIRC, its just a normal Throttle body...

If so.. Look inside the throttle body. I've seen 2 vehicles with bad bushings in the TB which made the butterfly move off of center.

If that happens you will see wear marks on the inside of the throttle body where the butterfly has been touching/hanging. the butterfly isn't supposed to drag on the body and when it does it tends to stick and hang.

Just something to check..

I second the throttle body issue. There was a recall on the throttle body on my 97 5.0L for sticking. Factory replacement was an edelbrock ;)
As for the TPS, If the TPS were bad it would buck like crazy and throw codes. HOWEVER, it could have come loose and shifted or still be loose and wandering. Check the screws first.
