Can anyone help!
I have a 97 mountaineer AWD/V8 with a bad Tcase. I also have a 97 trans and 4WD Tcase frome a 97 explorer. Will the 4WD boltin in place of the AWD Tcase. I know I will need the 4WD switch but will I also need the 4WD computer or can I just wire it up to engage the 4WD?

Welcome...I'm going to move this to the transmission/transfer case forum for better visibility for your question.

you need a 4406 t case

Try a search, I converted my 96 5.0L AWD to a true manual 4x4 shift t case using the BW4406 and the information available on this forum

No v6 t case will bolt up to your transmission
If you want to use a push button (e shift) version of the 4406 t case it requires ALOT more work, but we have had one member do it

I also have a 97.5 AWD V8 t case for sale, it has 68K miles on it and I will ship :)
PM me if you are interested in that

search for 4406 conversion and/or read the 4x4 conversion in my signature

Ditto. No v-6 t-case will bolt up. Swapping in a 4406 Electric shift and the associated electronics is not a simple task. A manual 4406 is the simplest and easiest way, but not without difficulties either.

You can use a V6 transfer case by utilizing an adapter kit from Advance Adapters. This actually has some attractive features going this way. However, you will be utilizing a transfer case that was not designed for the torque load of a V8. Don't know if that's a problem or not. You also must completely disassemble the transmission and install a different output shaft, then you must wire the 4WD components. That can be done, but it's by no means plug and play. 4406 is probably the cheaper, easier option as was suggested.

I sure wish Advance Adapter had gone with new input shafts for the transfer cases rather than making you completely disassemble the 4R70W.

Thanks For all your help! I guess I was saving this trans & Tcase for nothing. Oh well, time for a garage sale.
