98 5L V8 XLT AWD Clicking when in D and on the gas only??

Hey all,
I've got one I can't figure out and would definately appreciate some
thoughts and feedback. I've got a 98 5L V8 XLT AWD. The problem is that
when I am in Drive and hit the gas I get a clicking noise, sounds like
a loose belt but I'm not 100% sure. The sound is worse when the engine
is cold, starting out from a stop or going up a hill. It is NOT the
serpentine belt as that was the first thing I replaced... plus I only
hear it when in Drive and on the gas. Also, it seems to go away when I
get into the higher gears and lessens(but never goes away completely)
when the car warms up...

Any ideas please, I'm looking for a starting point and hoping I can
handle the repair myself(with the Haynes of course)??

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me. More than likely the exhaust manifod gaskest are bad at the exhaust manifold flange is warped. It's comon for the
V8.

This would explian why it does it more when it's cold or with a load on the engine.

you have the classic exhaust leak as Harvey pointed out hahaha
You need new 5.0L manifolds, I have 3 sets if you would like one PM me

my exhaust is leaking a little bit too , even if i have the steel headers , they are prone to leak ??

I was thinking the cats was leaking .

Under the heat shields you will find this--
these have been re-welded -you can see where they crack at the joint of the different material

I'm also a victim of this. It's affected my O2 sensors too.

Is there a replacement headers with better flow than the stockish ?? I never see headers like that . They can t flow well .
