98 Airbox inlet

Okay on the 98 4.0 SOHC I have the stock airbox and the inlet to the box is really small. Is this Ford's way of controlling the maximum air intake to control engine power? Can I open it up larger to improve anything? I am considering an AEM intake but not for a few months. I have other projects on this Explorer right now.

"swiss cheese" the air box to get more air in and well as removing the inlet cone. best result though is just getting a CAI.

Not at all. No mud anywhere near my house. Maybe a little rocky dirt trail driving but that's it.
