Hi,
My V8 AWD Explorer makes this howling noise when I press the gas lightly around 10-20 MPH, when I let go of the gas, the noise stop.

The dealer said that it is normal and the transmission is making the noise.

Is there any way to get rid of the noise?

Thanks,
Shane

Shane,

I think that the noise you're hearing may be the fan clutch, they tend to be kinda noisy on explorers. My mom has a 2000 v6, and it's noisier than mine (95)

i drove a 2000 XLT in Arizona and it was noticable louder at slower speeds also. I think it is the tires because i drove many other explorers that were used when I was looking for mine and they all had this annoying noise except mine. they had the stock firestones and I have BFG Long Trails.

I usually hear that "woo" noise when I am going at low speeds off road. Also heard it when driving in snow at slow speeds. Since I have awd I always figured it was the transfer case/power to the front wheels making the noise.
I used to own a Mazda B3000 and when the engine was hot and I had the A/C on, I would hear the fan cluth make a noise...like I had some type of turbo system...until I started driving and the engine would cool off a little. Just my .02

Where can I find this fan clutch? I'd like to grab my WD-40 and grease it like hell.

The noise also occurs in reverse, in a empty parking lot.

Thanks,
Shane

That is just the noise that the fan makes. There is nothing you can do about it without changing to a different type of fan.

But then again, Dead Link Removed

If it is making a "Wooo" noise when you are going slow are you sure that there wasn't a pretty girl walking by your truck at the time? Dead Link Removed LOL

Technically Velveeta isn't REALLY cheese... it's a cheese food...
The stuff that other cheeses eat... I guess.
