99 Explorer Limited AWD

This AWD thing really sucks. It's just a feeling like none I have ever had before in a vehicle. I wish it could be controlled somehow to be in either RWD or AWD when needed. I guess there is no simple fix to this? Doesn't look like the Brown Wire Mod works on AWD?

Not really, I got the 99 Limited w/ the Sohc V-6 because I didn't want AWD. It has nearly the same power outputs as the 5.0L and has a different 4x4 system. I drove a V-8 version as well. Don't let it stop you though, it is most likely safer anyway. Just in my opinion adds un necessary wear on parts otherwise used in snow or off roading only, and fuel economy, which you said does not bother you. Seriously though, that sway bar I spoke of above is a must have to help prevent roll overs. You don't have to have it but you will be happy you bought it.

When I said there were really no options, I assumed he would not want to do this to a car with 46k miles that is a Daughters Daily Driver. Even though thats what I would do!

You are correct. Too involved for me. And I'm not going to pay someone to do it. I can live with that funny feeling in the front end when making a very sharp turn. And the general feeling of being in 4WD all the time, well it is what it is.

I might concentrate on finishing my key and remote collection right now. I am up to 3 remotes and one key right now. Have two more keys coming in the mail.
:p:

Haha, my key ring breathed a sigh of relief when I got the 96 with no PATS key or fob. LOL

Well, looks like I am selling the 99. Daughter decided she wanted a newer body style. We ended up buying this last night.

Kids

I hope she is very appreciative of your purchases for her. When I was sixteen I had to work a full-time job (7 days a week over the summer, even though that's not allowed ;)) to save up for the '91 Explorer that I got as my first vehicle.

No kidding, i didn't get my first auto till i was a senior in high school. Then it was a 92 F-150 which i too had to pay on my own. Parents co signed the loan but that was it.

Anyways the newer explorer looks NICE!!! What year is it?

I have had a 98 Mountie AWD for over a year. Has 84k miles. I asked the same question you have when I got mine. At 47k miles, there is not much to worry about. Having said that, use the Search function for this sub forum and type in 5.0 AWD. This will eliminate everything on the 6 cyl models. You will find a short list. The one problem I have had, and you will probably have it, is the Can Snychronizer Gear. The symptom will be a chirp from the front of the engine. You may think it is a belt. There is a sticky on this subject and I was just recently involved in a long thread on this subject also, which IMHO is better than the sticky. Also, you may get some noise from the sway bar. Squirt silicone inside the bushings every now and then. Keep them soft. Do your fluids. These vehicles seem very strong until about 75k miles. Learn how to program the keyless entry and get an third key when you have 2. There's a sticky on that one also. Much has been written about suspension parts, like CV joints, front driveshaft etc. but I believe these are from off roaders mostly. YOu will probably lose the digital display on the radio. Very common. Wishing you and your daughter years of enjoyable driving.

It's a 2004. With 44,000 miles. And every option.

At least I won't have to get up and take her to school every morning, that is the blessing in disguise.
;)

ps - Sold the 1999 today, for $300 less than I paid for it. I think we came out pretty good on that deal too.

Today is the last day of my owning both the 1999 and the 2004.

The purchaser is picking up the 99 in half an hour.

So you are not keeping the '04 that you just bought:confused:

what a lucky kid...

I don't have my 00 Limited AWD yet because I gotta save up the down payment, and working P/T while going to college doesn't exactly do wonders on the wallet.

At least with the 04 you have Auto 4WD and you can do the mod to turn it into 2WD.
