I have a the 99 explorer, has the upper passenger side 2pc ball joint and control arm been replaced by a one piece?
I have broken the small adj. bolt on the front, is it ok to just replace the ball joint and not worry about the small bolt

You have to fix the broken bolt. And, I would go back to the 2 piece design..

ok thanks, do you know if the ford dealer has the replacement bolt ?

I'm sure they do.
You can probably get it at any parts store for cheaper..

1 piece vs 2 piece

I installed the Dorman one piece upper control arm (UCA) because it looked stronger and weighed less.

When it arrived I was disappointed that there were no provisions for a grease fitting. Also, the one piece requires the installation of adjustable camber/caster bolts or the alignment shops will complain: Replacing Camber/Caster Bolts

So I have a 1999 ford explorer xlt 2wd and I have a 2 piece but I want to go with a one piece will it hurt anything? I see you changed yours to a one piece. Because if I don’t have to buy the two piece I wasn’t planning on too.

That will work, don't sleep on alignment. Make alignment appointment, then repair.

Don't want to drive at all on new control arms until alignment is performed.
Here it's 3 weeks out

Okay so when you replace the passenger side two piece uca with the one piece uca you must also install camber correction alignment shims

Also control arm Bolts get torqued to 60 fr lbs but they do not get torqued until the vehicle is on the ground and at ride height…

I did what 410Fortune described above when I replaced the 2 piece with a one-piece UCA on my wife's old 99 Sport along with the camber adjuster plates, then got the F/E aligned. I also did the same on my old 2000 Ranger 4x4.

Are your control arm bushings shot? Back when I did mine, it just had the BJ boot torn, bushings looked good still. I didn't even get rid of the old one, thinking some day I might get motivated to find a boot for it but in the mean time...

I got a Mevotech MK8710T on clearance at Rock Auto, just the outer piece with the BJ in it, swapped that out, did not need an alignment. I'd marked the position of the old piece before removal. Did that over 6 years ago, no handling or tire wear problems since.
