bryan, I have a '99 xlt 4door with a flex-fuel/auto tranny. it did not come with a towing package, but I've had no problems towing.
I always tow with OD off and stop around 100 miles to check what I'm towing. when I stop I always pull the tranny dipstick out and check the fluid. 144k miles now and the fluid has never foamed or been hot enough to cause any problems yet.
recently towed a '92 explorer from SC to MS without a whimper. the ranger just keeps on going. I don't recommend it, but I have towed my '88 F-150 4-WD 60 miles one way on several occasions. (forgot to mention I'm crazy, too)
slow and easy starts, OD off, and frequent stops to check things will prevent some unnecessary breakage. ............jf
