I have a 99 Mountaineer. This morning the Ignition cylinder broke. I have since replaced it with one, that fits my old key. But now my car doesn't start. I also get 4 rapid beeps. I am not sure where they are coming from. But they only happen after I attempt to start my car. It acts like the immoblizer has kicked in, I am not sure how to disable it. The Sercurity Manual talks about a 2 digit code that I can't find. I am not sure what the problem might be. Unless the cylinder has some way of transmitting a code. Any Suggestions are welcomed.

The keys are coded so if you had your ignition cylinder replaced previously the keys you have for the cylinder that you just installed probably won't work without being programmed. I'd suggest calling a locksmith who can program keys for the PATS lock system to get your keys programmed or go to Ford and have it done.

It's the same keys as I had before. I just had the lock cylinder rekeyed to work with the orignal keys. Since it's the orignal key would I still need them reprogrammed?

So a quick update.

Thank your for your advice. I was finally able to get my car to start, but it seems to be experianceing a different type of problem. My alarm system no longer chirps, or and subsquently doesn't arm. The Fob's just unlock the car, and I have to hold the unlock button on the door, to get the immobilizer disabled. Any ideas what I can do? Is there a way to reset the system like a computer... or is the dealer the best option.

THanks for the help.

The lock cylinder-keys and pats module are coded to each other --yes

Never heard of that one JT. You sure on that? There is a module next to the cylinder that is separate from the cylinder that receives the PATS signal from the key, but I don't know of anything tying the cylinder into the mix.

Ditto. He should be able to replace the cylinder while leaving the transciever in place without an issue. In fact, it's in the service manual.

The procedure for removing the transciever is in an entirely separate section and does not require removal of the ignition cylinder.

Ignition Switch Lock Cylinder—Functional Lock Cylinder

Removal
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01.
  1. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder (11582).
    1. Insert the ignition key and turn to the RUN position.
    1. Press the ignition switch lock cylinder release pin while pulling out the ignition switch lock cylinder.

Installation
  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Verify ignition switch lock cylinder operation.

  1. Prove out the air bag system. For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B.

Ditto, the key code device next to the ignition key cylinder is not special, other than it is very fragile. Be very careful working around that.

The PATS module and PCM are matched to the key code. As long as you keep all of those together in the system it will work.

The test for the PATS key code is done at each start of the engine. If the code is not verified, then the "THEFT" light on the dash will flash, and the fuel pump will be disabled.

For the alarm I suggest going to Ford for that. It's likely that disconnecting power or certain components affects it, and a reset is needed. Regards,
