wanting to go 289 or 302 carb swap what is the best trans to use in an awd x

I would swap in a AOD, or C4 if you don't need Overdrive.

What are you intentions with this vehicle? Offroad only? Daily Driver? 2nd Vehicle?

how difficult is the swap from the 4.0l v6 to a 302? have a donor with transfer case. will i need different drive shafts?

It's not REALLY easy.

What year is the 302? What TC do you have?

More than likely you will have to find new driveshafts. Some people have been smart enough to find a driveshaft from a F-150 that works...
