A better idea in teh 2016 Explorer - rear hatch power lift

One thing I couldn't understand was how the power liftgate on the 2011+ Explorers had a clunky extra cylinder next to the rear hatch to lift it.

I saw a 2016 at the auto show and the power lift is integrated into the rear lift cylinders.

Did this come out before 2016? I hadn't noticed.

On one hand, a better idea. Thinking a little more on it, will be godawful expensive to replace later.

To what "extra" clunky cylinder are you referring to?

On the 2011's, at least, there was a separate cylinder, on the left side IIRC, that was the lift cylinder. It was in addition to the two gas struts.
