A/C compressor cycling every 5 sec

Okay Chris, fix mine also. I am probably headed to a friendly AC shop. My 98 is acting like it is sending some air through the heater core. Everything is slightly warm, to very warm(vent). This is after warm up. I think when my engine is cold, it cools okay. I believe my problem is in the under dash unit. I may have my system evacuated, two new o-rings/clamps installed, and refilled. The capacity of 22 ounces sounds like nothing though.

The warranty issue is one of the things that pisses me off. The advisor told me that Ford inspects every part that is replaced under warranty and is trying nail dealerships for false warranty claims. He said he wouldn't touch the compressor, because if they replaced it and it turned out it wasn't defective, the dealership would have to repay the cost to the warranty company. Since everything seemed to be OK according to their tests, he didn't think it was worth the risk. They won't repair anything until they know exactly what's wrong.

I don't know if I should take the truck back to them with the videos, take it to a different dealer with the videos, or just buy the compressor and fix it myself at work, with the help of one of our technicians who knows how to use the A/C equipment. Problem with the last option is finding someone who isn't already booked with side jobs for the next couple of months.

Thanks, everyone for your advice so far. Hopefully this gets fixed soon.

Well, if you cannot get them to look harder at the compressor now, find someone with the ability to inspect the clutch. Have them remove the belt, and check the clutch for play, and to listen to the bearings. If the sound is coming from there, and it goes away when engaged, I'll bet the clutch is going bad(too much play, or some small break). Good luck,

I played the videos on my computer, and I could hear the squealing really well...much better than on the crappy camera speaker. Sounds more like a chirp though than a squeal. I tried to email them to myself to view at work, but they are too large to send. I need to get some editing software and shorten them up a bit.

I went out and ran the truck again for a couple of minutes and it still made all the noises, but the pshhhhh noise at end went alot longer than I thought it did before. I timed it at 25 seconds this time.

You can screw around with this forever. Just replace the compressor assy. Get one from the pick and pull. You could have bought 3 of them with the money you spent at the useless dealership. Just like Glacier said.
