Hey I currently have a 1992 XLT X-Ploder. I want to get a little better gas mileage and more performance. On the other hand I have very little money to dink around with.

Can I remove the air box and put a conical filter on? I did this in my 1992 Grand Marquis LS with a 4.6SOHC and it wouldnt run right because the MAF was ready too much air.

Would I be able to completly remove the tube and put the MAF right against the throllte body and put on a conical filter? I also heard bad things about this like the MAF ready too much air flow and the air not being cool like it would be down front.

Let me know what I can do, Thanks!

Keep the MAS sensor the stock distance away from the throttle body.

Many many many many people are runing an open element filter on their MAS as you describe.
YOu need to resett he computer after you modify any sensor /sensor reading.

Also the MAS may have been confused beause you were sucking up hot air from under the hood, hot air is not as dense and will hurt performance.

You can modify your airbox to allow more airflow, try a search.
I personally think most "cold air intake" kits are a joke unless they are actually FED cold air from outside. If you are sucking up more hot air its only going to hurt, a cold air charge is the key to making power. Will not effect MPG as much as you think.

there are many things you can do for really cheap to open up the intake and improve the ability to get cold air to the throttle body.

Search button is your friend.
