Hi!
I’m new to Rangers so forgive any dumb questions I may ask.
Also forgive the long history.

Last week I purchased a 1991 Ranger xlt 4.0, 4wd Automatic Trans code T.
After taking a few days to get things into shape and working properly, (tailgate, tail lights, headlights and the like. I sent my son to the store in it. When he returned, he said the engine revved up and the truck wouldn’t pull, for a while, then it began to pull again. My son is not very automobile savvy, so I took what he said with a grain of salt.

BTW I am no wizard either.

The next day I proceeded to back the truck out. It went fine in reverse, but when I put it in drive (actually OD) to go forward the vehicle shifted out of reverse and did nothing it felt like I had put it in neutral. I left it in drive for a few seconds thinking perhaps the filter was plugging up and slowing down the shift. But nothing, so I put it back in reverse. It shifted into reverse like there was nothing wrong, so I put it back in drive. Again nothing happened, not even a hint that I had put it into drive so I revved the engine up to about 1500 rpms a couple of times in short bursts, still nothing. Once more to reverse, this time it slammed into reverse a bit harshly (engine was at an Idle). But backed up just fine, so back into drive, nothing for a 5 seconds or so then it harshly shifted into drive and began to pull I put the truck in park and talked to my son for a few moments. Then I put it into drive. It shifted somewhat harshly then I drove it 7 miles to my cousin’s house (it shifted just fine) to do some more work on it. Did a little welding and other work on it then put it into drive to go home after checking the trans fluid and adding ½ quart. Nothing, so I repeated what I had done at home several times. Not even a hint that I had put it into drive.

The nest day I changed the trans filter, fluid was still red but it did smell a little burnt.
Still the same, it made no change.

I’m not too up on the electrical gizmos on the new vehicles (91 ain’t new, unless your old like me)

Is there some gadget I should know about or something else I should be aware of?
Or is the tranny junk?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

THANKs

Reverse has higher hydraulic pressure than drive, so there is more positive engagement in that setting. This could be related to bad clutch pack lip seals, valve body gaskets, sticking valve body spools or loose valve body bolts. Connect a 0-300 PSI test gauge to the rear port on the driver's side, and take readings in each gear setting.

Forward requires sufficient pressure to lock up the forward clutch. Often insufficient pressure can be caused by hardened seals. There can be other causes.

The fact you have it on occasion rules out a bad front one way clutch, which is good news.

Here is what I would do. Get a can of trans-x and add it to the tranny.... try and use the vehicle gently to get that to circulate. Leave it in there for about a week and see if the seal softener in it has helped. If so, replace the fluid and filter (make sure you get the seals on the filter properly) and see if your problem doesn't continue to improve.

There is some chance it will. If not, hen you have other things to think about.

ps. while you are there torque the Valve body properly.... just good insurance.

Thanks

Thanks so much for your timely reply.
I will try as you suggest.
Thanks again
Randy

He guys having the same problem no forward only reverse
- Had it rebuilt less than a year ago
- changed-- modulator
------------voltage regulator
------------TCC
------------ pulled trans found govenor sprang stuck and worn
reinstalled trans to no avail same problem
can't afford another rebuild
checked fluid in transaxle - overfilled- sorry but not the problem
Hard to pull Servos with pulling trans again
Any help ?

last with = without

If you are up to it, pull the pan and the valve body and check that all of the valves will move. Of course, look around for anything suspicious. Look for the little plastic filter (1/4 in diameter by 3/4 inch long) that is in the valve body plate with gaskets on either side. I am pretty sure that the little filter got out and was smashed into some of the valves to make them stick on mine. I could not get the valve body apart on some of these valves so bought a different valve body to install - this was the only thing I could find wrong with it. But I haven't been able to get it reassembled yet.

pulled pan found the internal pump was stuck and had no spring (the 94 A4LD did) removed and replaced
checked both selenoids ohms and click test both good
checked both servos still looked good realigned and reinstalled
filled it back up and still has same problem
Any help out there?

error code 629

Was getting error code 629 checked harnesses and solenoids to no avail
removed valve body replaced TCC solenoid
still getting error code
found tcc connector shorted Only sold by FORD ( junk yard )

replaced connector no more error code 629
waiting for proper torgue wrench to reinstall valve body correctly to test vehicle

Ended getting to old A4LD's and maked a good one been driving with it since then

Okay the real story after seven tries with and old used "junk Yard" transmissions ended up rebuilding a new transmission out of the old transmissions been working fine for the last two years "everyday"

Cost Under $100 "half price sales" :)
