A4LD shifting issue

Check fluid level, check vac modulator, and it couldn't hurt to re-adjust your bands. Sometimes they break and you'd notice during the adjustment procedure if a band was broken.

I win!

Glad you got it figured out, but sorry it wasn't something simpler and cheaper.

M5OD conversions are fortunately well documented so it shouldn't be too hard.

Alternately, have you considered replacing the band yourself? Could be fun! Maybe less effort than sourcing and installing the manual trans?

It's fairly easy to do but don't under estimate the cost to do the full swap.

Yeah, new parts are costly. Luckily, there's a yard nearby that has great prices. But with pedals, cluster, harness, tranny, shifter, master & slave, and a shiny new clutch with a resurfaced flywheel, it was much more than I expected.

On the other hand, now I don't have to baby the tranny anymore and be scared of it blowing every time I climb up into the mountains.

I still have the A4LD, with the modified pan that has a welded in drain plug as well as a welded temp sensor and accompanying gauge, so I may decide to go for the frankentranny rebuild at some point, or just sell it for cheap to a member here so they can give it a go. The yard would give me a core for it, but other than the band the tranny was still great; with firm shifts and no weird noises. Even had damned good pressure when I tested it.

Sounds like a busted band to me. Have you attempted to adjust them yet? If you feel no resistance at all in the bolts, it be broke-ed to shizz.

They like to break at the clips, and sometimes the clips fall into the pan when you turn the adjuster bolts. Listen carefully for a plop plop fizz fizz when doing so :D

Oh, and I heard the ting plop plop. You were dead on. :-(

I hear ya! Plus I'm dealing with a poorly maintained Explorer on top of trans issues. My 5th/reverse slider is shot. Luckily the local trans shop has a used set for $40. Hopefully this is the last we both have to deal with these for a while.

It won't stay in fifth gear. The second you start to put a load on it it shoots out of gear.

Ah. That is not my issue at all. Had a 89 tempo that had that issue with every gear near enough.

I've found that for the Beast's new tranny sometimes shifting into both first and second gear seems incredibly stiff, like there is too much resistance, and rarely some clunking, but no grinding noise like it would if the clutch was not engaging. What do you suppose that might be?

Guessing worn synchros. If you can still do it I'd keep plugging away. It's be a job to do those.

So does, we all know my a4ld needs some love. Before I take its back to the yard as a core, does anybody want it?

Regardless, I think I'll pull the pan and sell it, along with its temperature gauge, to anyone who would like it.

If I lived closer, I'd be all over it. :(

You might try listing it on the forum Classifieds. Somebody here would probably love to have it.
