adjust your TPS (another free hp mod)

Adjusted my TPS last night

and let me tell you, WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Mainly in idel, which used to be terribly sporadic, but is now quiet and smooth. Will check on milage after my trip this weekend.
FYI - Had to use the ground from the A/C compressor to get an accurate reading.
Thanks!
Karl

One word.... WOW!!!
I just adjusted mine from .73 to .96 and I felt like I was driving a different truck. It was incredible! The throttle response was amazing. I can't say enough about the change in my X!

A mileage increaseisclaimed in thefirstpost.... pleaseexplain how?

Anyonewhoperformedthismod see any mileage increase?

Thanks.....

Strech,
Try 625rpm.
First check & clean the Throttle Plate & Body.
Then set idle
Then check your TPS & reset it.
disconnect the battery
connect the IAC valve
connect the battery
race around the block

Thanks Funmobile. If I get some free time I'll try that out.

I am still awaiting a replay concerning mileage improvement with this mod.

i dunno Al. my driving varies so much it would be pointless for me to even try to tell a difference. one week is mostly trips, next is all town, the next is half towing etc... i honestly dont think its changed. overall im still getting about what i always got before.

Thanks, James, I don't see how it would improve mileage.

The TPS mod has the potential to both increase and decrease gas milage. If your current voltage is under 0.96, then the engine is most likely running lean at idle, using less fuel than it should be, but as a result getting better "milage." If you adjust it, your milage will theorecticly go down, since you will be using more fuel while idling(but gaining a smoother idle). If your voltage was above 0.96 (mine was over 1.1) then a rich condition (excess fuel being used) will occur. Adjusting the TPS made my truck use less fuel while idling. If you sit in stop and go traffic, this mod has the potential to effect you more than if you do primarily highway driving, since it's an idle quality mod.

However: This all depends on how the PCM actually uses TPS data vs MAF data. What truly controls fuel flow? If the MAF is telling the PCM that the engine is running at 850rpm, but the throttle is advanced (TPS voltage over 0.96) then how much fuel is delivered? Which sensor has priority?

V8BoatBuilder,
The TPS doesn't control the Idle Mix, it's reference for the computer. The TPS lets the computer know when you reach WOT so it can switch off the accessories. The MAS and O2's control the mix. Interactive Systems Technology had an adaptor called the Air-Adjuster that would go inline with the MAS so you could control the ratio. Haven't seen any of their Ads latly so I don't know If they are up to date with the new 5wire MAS.

Where can I get of those little bolt for the tps? Mine is kinda worn from trying to remove it.

you may be able to use a 6-32 screw(?) for it. Not sure, I haven't worn mine out. The oldr ones had a Philips head before they went with Torx.

highway mileage

I took a trip I normally do on the weekends in the summer with this TPS mod. Here are my results:

Old TPS voltage 1.2, 17.5 mpg on the highway. (I know, really $hitty)

New TPS voltage 0.95, 18.8 mpg on the highway.

Didn't really get the throttle response as much, but I already have the BBK 65mm TB. I absolutely noticed the quieter idle though, so I'm happy.

And I'm no where near the 30 club! ;)

i replaced my tps and iac earlier this week and also filled my fuel tank w/87 oct. and a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. When i fill up again this weekend i'll let you guys know how i did on mpg. I was getting around18-19. I can tell a difference now because previously my explorer was creating a choked smell and now i don't smell any fuel, all around seems to be running better

well i havent even moved my tps sensor and its going stupid

it was first at
1.01
then
1.10
now
1.25

my voltmeter ran outa battery (damn damn damn) so i cant tell what it is up to this date.

My TPS was set at .97v apparently.... but it doesn't matter, becuase I couldn't get the screws that hold it down out for the life of me. I'm just going to leave it where it is and look elsewhere to explain my rough idle.

I can say I did gain mileage and response, but did not notice any change in idle.

The mileage gain was about 60 miles per tank and then after I had backfiring issues:eek: I disconnected the battery and now I am running about 30 extra miles consistantly per tank. May have been a fluke really, 60 is a bit high.

My initial reading was .94v

still on the same tank of gas here i should be filling up this weekend, hopefully it will last that long!

I checked mine and it was at .96, so there's nothing more to do on mine. P.S. as was discussed earlier in this thread, on 1st gens:

1) white/red stripe wire--reference line
2) gray wire (tap this wire to test tps)
3) black wire--ground

Tapping to the gray wire and to the firewall grounding strap is the easiest way on a 1st gen truck.
