advance trac warning

Ok here is the update: The dealership in Payson said I need to replace the steering column, like I read on the thread Peter posted above (thanks Peter). But he said it will take them 5 days to get that part. So he suggested I drive it back to Phoenix and get it fixed closed to home. They did a software update so he says I should be able to drive back without issues.
I went ahead and called the Phoenix dealership and I will drop it off next Tuesday after my vacation is over and hopefully get it fixed. They are saying they will most likely just replace a sensor and not the whole steering column under that recall but they need to see it themselves first.
In the end it seems it's a power steering issue that is messing with the Advance Trac. So I will post next week once it's fixed just so other readers can learn from my experience but it seems the other thread has all the info on this that you need.

@Andres R, did your dealership in Phoenix repair the Advance trac and Steering issue? I am having the Advance trac issue also and bring-it to the dealer tonight on my 2015 Explorer.

The Phoenix dealer did nothing. I dropped it off, told them the Payson dealership said the steering rack needs to be replaced. They tested my Ex and said everything is working fine now and that there is no need to replace anything, that the software updated it’s all that needed to be done.
They wanted to charge me $95 for the inspection. I told them o found that a bit ridiculous and they lowered it to $65 after some talking.
Not very happy with the outcome but we have driven some 500 miles since then and no issues.
I guess only time will tell if this happens again.
Good luck and let us know how it goes for you!

@Andres R, Thanks for your reply. Don't you hate when that happens, I always dread the unresolved issues! But the flip side is it didn't cost you much.

For my situation. I brought my vehicle to a licenced ford technician and he scanned the vehicle and 2 issues popped up that would cause the TMS to malfunction.
1- Left Rear Wheel speed control sensor - (ABS) - Test drove-it with the mechanic and the sensor was dead, not registering any speed whatsoever.
2- Steering column error or off-centre (I don't recall the exact error). - on that one the technician will have to do more research because it's not quite clear what that could actually be and how it affects the TMS system.

So for now we will for sure replace the wheel sensor and go from there. I will keep all of you updated on the next steps.

Cheers,

Goodbye Ford! You have really let me down now... can't trust this car anymore. If you know of anybody in Arizona looking for an unreliable SUV that I used to love a lot, contact me.

Dec 15th 2017 was my original post with the issue I had, you can read it above. This morning (with 99,650 miles) we were again on a road trip, this time going up to Flagstaff. Skis in the back ready to hit fresh powder that is currently falling. Baby sleeping in the back, my wife as passenger. Lift ticket already purchased and all of our friends on the way up there as well so we could have a good time.

One hour into our trip, going up the first "steep long hill" , same freaking problem happened again!!! Advance Trac warning and Power Steering warning. This time I knew better, I didn't turn the car off so I wouldn't loose power steering. At the next exit, we turned around and headed back to Phoenix. On our way back we hit rush hour, our 5 month old got hungry ans started crying, and to top it off he pooped all over the car seat.

Dropped off the Ex at the Phoenix dealership (Earnhardt), again, and told them this time the software update is not acceptable and they need to get this fixed the right way. Then they got me a rental car, but I have to pay the $7 tax per day for the rental car. I got pretty furious at this time and came back to the counter and told them to give me a ride home, that I am not paying some stupid tax.

So now I am home, instead of skiing, already took a day off from work which is pretty much going to waste. Now I need to go to KBB and see what I can get for this piece of junk on Craigslist.

Sorry to hear about your issue again Andres, and your ruined plans. As stated here several times, the software update for the power steering problem is NOT a fix. The only resolution is to replace the steering rack like you asked. Hopefully that is what they'll do this time.

Issue resolved!

- My mechanic replaced the Left rear wheel sensor and the advance track problem has now cleared, the issue with the steering column seems to have gone away also. so for 195$, I got the vehicle scanned 3 times and the wheel sensor replaced. This was done last week and it runs perfectly now.

Fingers crossed that this is all it needed because my wife and I really like this SUV.

Good to hear. There have been a few reports of issues caused by wheel sensors. Previous reports were due to driving in deep snow.:(

The dealer finally got the part in they ordered and the issue was fixed. Both the advancetrac and the air bag light went off, apparently they are controlled by the same part which had gone bad. So if yours goes off it's likely the same issue.

Part #BB5Z*14B321*A was replaced, and this fixed the issue.

The biggest issue is the service guys don't really have everything from ford about how to work on the new explorer. So they might get a problem like mine, and not have any idea what to do. Which was the case for my vehicle.
Hello, I know this is an old message, but could you share the cost to fix the issue. I had this turn on last night and I'm worried about cost. Thank you.

I think you may be out of luck getting a response from the member you quoted. He was last seen here on November 10, 2011. Hopefully, another member may have the answer.
