Hi,
just driving along quite happily when I lost all forward gears, no noise or loud bangs. Car being looked at by local autobox specialists, who advised that the gearbox has had its day due to something breaking inside and damaging rest of box. Now my dilema - complete rebuild etc £2000, or secondhand fitted £500. anyone had similar experience or got any advice - Vehicle is R '98 with LPG conversion and 94000 miles and apart from this problem is in good condition with no other problems - at the moment.

id get a second opinoin about this as alot of replys are "rebuild" when it could be the simplist thing that needs doing.

well if it was me (and it maybe soon lol) you may just aswell by one of the fords of ebay and have a whole ex for spares;) for and £500-£800

My choice would be the secondhand one if your old box is beyond repair. A second opinion is definitely always worthwhile. Only proviso with going secondhand is that you need to trust the guys who are fitting it to check it out properly first. I personally would check the history of the secondhand box - why is it available in the first place? - was the car wrecked or just past its sell by date? Get it wrong and you could be back to square one.

thats the benifit of buying the whole car,you get to so it all in one peice (hopefully still driving) you get to see it working, and all that for a couple of hundred more-which the rest of the spares that will keep you on the road forever would be well worth.

Great idea if you have the space and time - I personally would be stuffed with somewhere to keep it, let alone break it.
