air filter box removal

somewhere on this site i saw someones air box with holes cut out... i have a 2000 sport and would like todo the same...problem is i can't figure out how to remove the air box... can someone please help!!!

one question, do you have the round airbox or the square one? if you have the round one, i can help you.

1. open the band clamp and separate the two halves of the box.

2. at the top of the half that is still attached to the inner fenderwell, you will find a pin type clip. pull out on the clip with a flat screwdriver, then pull the clip out.

3. pull up on the round half of the box that you just liberated the clip from to release the two "feet" from the mounting bracket on the bottom..

4. pull it back toward the dr. side of the vehicle.

5. voila! you have now removed your airbox!

to reattach it, just reverse the removal instructions.

just in case, heres how you do the square one

1. unclip the top
2. loosen the hose clamp
3. take top airbox assembly off
4. remove air filter
5. using a flat screwdriver, press into the 3 sides of each of the 2 pegs, pulling upward on the box.

Those studs are popped into rubber grommets, some people say just rip it out, but thats how i broke mine!! use the screwdriver to pry the rubber away from the stud, then pull the whole box up and toward the engine.
the 2 posts that go into the fender should slide out.

after that you have 2 options:
leave the airbox off and strap a K&N up to the intake (i did this first but got a lot of grime in the intake)
start cutting!!

have you heard this

a jeep owner told me to just take off my intake assembly box and all. and just use a bicycle clamp, a piece of panty hose and one other something to strain the air. with these make my own less restrictive filter.
i am sure that i would have a ton more power but what about my engine?
how well would that work?

do not do that i did that to my old beater car becuse i didnt care but i found that the panty hose rips way to easily and i found "gunk" like twigs and leaves when i drained my oil.
 






You will probabley get alot of crud in your intake.... I was kinda thinking of leaving the bottom of my air box off and some how clamping my k&n filter to the intake but i dunno

So did you notice a big increase in power with the panty hose. i might try it for a day or so. on road


I also thought about taking the bottom of my air box off and duct taping my k&N on there. would that make a difference either?

i had a toyota tercel it was on road and it still sucked crap in do not to that to your explorer i am warning you!!!!!! YOULL BE SORRY
 






calcutta, puleeeeeze don't do it! i would hate to hear that you had killed your explorer by doing that. anyway, it's a two ton suv, not a dragster, i don't think you would even notice any sort of gain just by taking off the filter. it's just not worth it. now if you were to pull off the housing to get a little less restricted airflow, but left the filter on, you will get a little performance (not really noticeable) while not sacrificing the longevity of your engine.
 






you MUST have a filter on there.

i myself took the bottom off the box and used cable ties to hold the filter up. it worked pretty well for a while, but after a while there was some sludge in the intake tube
