Airaid CAI

The grill cut out appears to be the most direct route for fresh air however however I can't get past what would happen during a heavy rain storm at highway speeds! Water is going to get through and sucked up by the open air filter. That wouldn't work for me.

This is the Sport grill mod I copied from another poster who did this back last year.

Yupp^^ did this about a year ago. I have driven through the heaviest rain storms imaginable and had no issues with water. A few drips could splash through sure, but its not enough to cause any type of issue IMO.

As seen on many other 3.5 ecoboost engines, a CAI intake will yield you nearly nothing in regards to gains. I'd recommend putting your money into other worthy modifications. Just my .02.

I have a 2016 Explorer Platinum and I added a Magnaflow Catback exhaust and running the Livernois 93 Octane tune with the 3bar and thermostat. I am getting ready to add a Airaid CAI and was wondering if anyone is running one?

Your thread was merged with this existing one. The easy way to find out "if anyone is running one" is to use the Forum's 'Search' feature in the upper right corner. Becoming familiar with it can be quite helpful in finding threads on existing topics. There isn't much that hasn't been discussed here over the past 7 years. Good luck with your project.

What kind of results did you get from the Magnaflow?

Has anyone tried this on the newest gen sport grille?

Do you mean has anyone tried the grill cut out that I did on my 2014 on their 2016/17 style grill?

I don't think anyone here has posted I was tempted to be the ginny pig but was holding off hoping someone else would take the plunge first.

Oh another thing that I noticed as I drove it today for a lengthy time was the BOV releasing into the intake track. Kinda made you think what was that noise the first couple of times you hear it, kinda a popping sound. I couldn't hear this with the stock intake, though not something I would call a pleasing sound like the BOV releasing to the atmosphere.
I have that same popping in my 2017 sport. Very annoying

All: See the thread titled air intake-from where? I simply drilled a few holes through the grill into that chamber and it seems to have made a performance difference. Just runs better. Honky.

If you've seen the Air intake-from where? thread-- the other day I went out to the sixth (skipped 5 for now) area on the passenger side of the grill and bored a 1/2" hole in it. Made performance a touch better. Drove around in the rain (not a terrible downpour) for about an hour today and checked that area with a flashlight soon as I got back. A few small drops were on the chamber bottom behind the holes but nothing to be concerned with. Observed that most water had run from the bottom of the holes down the inside wall of the grill and must have drained out through the openings down there (the place where the factory was letting the air in from the outside) I guess. I really like Sgt1411's mod posted on Aug. 10, 2014. That's true ram-air and the box must have a positive pressure when you reach a certain speed. But, I'm still worried about too much water so, I'm holding off for now. I'm still thinking though, and if I can look through my 76 year old collection of junk or find a piece of plastic, or something at any of the stores for anything that I can cut and modify to make a flip-down cover for that area that would keep most water from getting into the intake port when flipped down, I'll fabricate the cover first, find some flip down swivels off of who knows what and after putting that in place and making sure it works--I'll saw that area out like Sarge did. As an aside, after looking at the Airaid box 402-260, I only had one question and that was, "why didn't they just put a lid on the box so that the only air that got in was from the stock cold air intake?" And, my research probably has the answer--and that was the fact that they knew that without modifying the grill area to let more cold air in, nothing was going to happen. But, hopefully when the vehicle was up to speed, there would be "other" air that could be brought in. Of course, that "other" air was under the hood hot air. And, most owners get a little apprehensive when it comes to cutting up their vehicle like slicing out or drilling the grill or anything that they fear may/could be/might be a warrantee or trade-in problem--so, I understand.. It may take me the next year or so to build that flip down lid--but, I'll do it as time allows. That's it for now.
