I would like to buy a mac intake for my 2001 v8 x, but can't justify spending $184 for it just to switch out the filter. I've seen the cheap ebay intakes on ebay. Would these work as well as a mac if i used my amsoil filter? Or, can i piece together a quality system? If so, does anyone have links for the parts?
I also have a mac intake on my 99 4.0 SOHC. Is it possible to make this work on a 5.0? Thanks!!

Most air intake setups work the same. Many people have rigged up their own from scratch. Search around. The Amsoil filters are a great option (I went that route).

The intake tube from a SOHC kit is unlikely to work with a 5.0, as is. I rigged up my setup from a SOHC Volant kit, but the intake tube shape/size is vastly different than the 5.0 setup. You could most likely use the rest of the hardware from your SOHC kit, but would need a new tube. That's not a bad idea either. That's what I ended up doing (I use an intake tube from a 5.0 MAC kit with my Volant hardware).

I personally love my amsoil filter. I could actually feel the different versus a k&N and other filters of such. I am a die hard amsoil air filter fan after seeing the results. Def worth the money

And the simple maintenance is hard to beat. Pull out a shop vac, clean out some of the excess dust and you're done.

I'm running one too. I'd go for it - just make sure the dimensions are correct.

You could build one. I used the stock intake with a Spectre filter. I took off the back half of the airbox, and put the "shop vac" tube from the front of the airbox and routed it down to the bumper. Waaaay more power, won't suck up water if the bumper goes under, and looks semi-factory. Oh and $80 including the price of the first filter I destroyed.

Would adding an Amsoil drop in or cone filter to the factory box get the same hp results as a mac intake system? Is the filter the main factor?

Intake setups are less restrictive overall because the restrictions of the stock airbox are lessened. A filter is just a filter and isn't really a bottleneck. Amsoil cone filters clamp onto the end of a more efficient breathing setup. You don't need MAC. Rig up your own. Tons of great threads out there.

Air intakes do make a difference, but moreso when you open up the exhaust and have some custom tuning done. Pretty easy stuff to do. Will really wake up your trucks.

I installed the mac cat back exhaust this week so the new intake should help some. If anyone has a mac intake or parts that will work for an 01 5.0 pm me :)

I got the v6 mac intake to fit onto the v8! I flipped the tube around, sealed off one of the holes with an old 60's vw door hinge plug and added longer bolts and rubber shock bushings to the mac mounts. The longer bolts gave me enough play to align the intake tube. :)

I have never heard of a true cold air intake sucking up water, I think its more internet myth than anything.
