Hi, apologies if this is a repeated ask. Since a week ago the transmission in my 92 XLT 4WD started acting weird. I have driven it about for a few days trying to pin down the symptoms.

In general, in lower speeds the tranny wants to stay in 1st. Under normal accelleration, the revs will go up to the redline and it will evntually shift up. When in 2nd, a light press of the gas pedal (mid-travel) will cause it to down shift even on the flat with revs surging up to 4-6k range.

When accelerating from stand-still I can make the tranny shift to 2nd by backing off the gas. The shift itself is slower than before with a slight surge in revs. Once in 2nd gear it upshipts and downshifts through the rest of the gears fine.

I have limited understanding of what governs the shifts - is this likely to be sticking valves or an electrical (speed/rev sensor issue).

Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

It is a sticking governor. If you type sticking governor into the search it has been covered several times. It is a typical A4LD problem. Good Luck!

Could aslo be the modulator vavle. Run a search on that as well. Tahts teh most common thing I have seen cause erratic shifting.
