I do my own oil changes and have had this same scenario happen to me TWICE now with Fram Extra Guard oil filters; i change the filter and oil, put the new filter on the same way ive been doing for 25+ years and the last 2 Fram oil filters have failed miserably within seconds of starting the engine. Seems that no matter what, the filter doesnt seat nicely against the engine and oil pours from the seal. Luckily i remembered what happened LAST time and kept the oil catch pan under the oil filter to prevent 2 quarts of oil form spilling on the garage floor...The oil filter is the PH2. Ive checked that the old gasket wasnt still left on there before the new filter went on and no other kind of oil filter leaks. This just bugs me...

Sounds like the old oil filter seal sticks to the filter house and ur new filter attached to it cause that problem. I had to happen once when I noticed a old filter missing a seal and it made a mess in the driveway. So.. then next time I make sure the old filter seal remains on the old filter.

yeah i thought that same thing at first but i made sure that the old seal was off both times. Im thinking there is a problem with the PH2 filters or maybe the PH2 really isnt for the X as indicated in the filter books...

Never happend to me ( I never use Fram though )
but I have heard of more than a few friends have this or other porblems happen with Fram filters.
( thus the reason I am not a Fram user )

I've got a fram on mine now (they didn't have the motocraft one in stock) I didn't have that problem.
I've picked up a motocraft for the next change though.

When I worked in a shop we worked on trhe police crown vics. These were notorious for having the old gasket stick on the mount surface. If that old gasket is left on, I have seen it result in oil spraying all over because the new filters gasket cannot sealk properly.

Last time I was under my truck changing the oil I noticed an awful lot of leakage around the filter....now i'm wondering if it's the filter and not some kind of old engine syndrom. I think next time i'll try the motorcraft and make sure that seat is clean. I always put alittle oil on the new gasket just to help it seat. Might as well try a new brand...less oil spots are always a good thing ;)

Fram PH2? Is that what you use for the V8 engine? I use PH8 for my SOHC. If its the same size, try that.

If you coat the filter seal with some old oil then it won't stick.

The V8 uses a different filter than the SOHC. Be sure to use wthe one called for.

I experienced the same old gasket being stuck on mess even though I always coat the gasket with fresh oil prior to install. I now always verify the old gasket is off before the new one goes on.

On my wife's van (filter PH3600) I did have a slight problem with the filter not going on all the way. It seamed as though the threads weren't cut just right. I gave is some muscle and got it tight and verified it didn't leak. 4 subsequent filter changes without any issues.

Fix to this problem: Buy a motorcraft filter! all the v6's have FL1A's and I haven't looked for the V8 one yet. I have never had a problem with them.

If anyone remembers the oil filter study that was posted a while ago, it stated the FRAM fileters were basically junk. I went over to WIX becasue it was more highly rated. I don't know the model number for the V8 engine though.

It is common for FL820 filters to double gasket (ie old oil seal sticks to block when removing old filter and installing new one)

Fram filters are junk and I personally wouldnt run one on my truck unless I planned on replacing the motor soon. Motorcraft, Mobil1, and Wix are much better choices.

Also the oil filter adapter can come loose from the engine, causing what seems like the filter to leak, though it is actually the adapter to engine fitting.

I avoid FRAM filters for ANYTHING.

Use Motocraft and problems will be gone.

Also not only do you want to verify the o ring is not left behind, but you also need to verify the mating surface is clean and free of debris, old gasket, or dirt.

I have a friend who works at Wal-mart doing oil changes. They use Fram and at their location they have had the actual filter fall apart on two separate occasions and ruin the engine. Motorcraft good, Fram bad...

I used a FRAM Tough Guard the week after I bought my truck....unfortunately it leaked oil from the seal/gasket area....just a small drip....but annoying nonetheless.....I then switched over to MotorCraft and not had a problem since.

I think those who used Frams, should take the leaky filter back to the store for a replament. Frams have the most shelf space and they are producing crabby products. If everyone start returning it to the store, Frams might get the message for the consumers. I've even seen the Fram spin on filter typle blew up on motorcycle application! Personally, I stayed away from Fram. Motorcraft and AC delco for the other vehicle.
