Local dealer has a 96 850GLT for about 2.5k below blue book.

Exterior and interior look great, have not driven it yet.

What are some watchouts on these that could be making the price too good to be true?

Don't worry, not dropping the Army Bauer... Wife has a baby now she wants a Volvo...

Thanks

is it a turbo?

I believe so, GLT. Thought the T meant turbo.

Either way, 850GLT price/mileage request on KBB.com comes back much higher than this thing is listed at the dealer.

well, you can try to provoke some honesty and see why it's cheaper. in general i've heard volvo's are pretty good cars, but they can have their little problems just like our Explorers.

well I'm not much help but with the turbo you want to look for a blown head gasket, exhaust leak, or high miles, thats all....major stuff that cost major $$$$ to fix. Volvo's are awesome cars and engine's...good luck!

Before you buy it take it to a Volvo guy and have him look it over, best investment you can make when dropping a bundle of $$$$ that big

The turbo's on Volvo's last longer than any other turbo's I've seen (had Saab and Subaru turbo's which were also good).

The Volvo's tend to need TB cleaning a lot - can mess with the computer to the point they run rough when cold. The rear driveshaft on many models has a large support bearing in the center that can fail and is a PITA to change.

I just got rid of my '89 740GL for $1800 and it was in great shape - even got a call from the buyer thanking me (1 month later) - must mean I undersold it...

All in all it was a great car - I would buy another...

My dad had a '78 240 that went 400,000 miles over the course of 16 years. That car lasted forever. He then bought a new '95 940 Turbo. That car is really good as well. He has put almost 200,000 miles on it with no major problems with it. Turbo works like new. Just regular maintenance and few little things. Volvos are great cars, highly recommended. My fiances next car may just be a Volvo. I won't ever have to worry about her knowing those things are the safest cars on the road.

My parents tried a couple Volvo turbos. Both were constantly in the shop for all sorts of problems. No more Volvos for them.

Yep Rick, that's what scares me.

I had a company 740 GLT wagon for a while, it was great. The guy who got it after me.... well...perhaps I drove it a little hard...

Got a call into the dealer to talk about it.

Thanks guys.

My dad always keeps his cars for 2 years then gives them to my mom for another 3. I was while she had them that most of the problems occured. The cars were maintained by the book.

Hank,

We had a 98' S70 GLT - the LT is the light pressure turbo. The S70 used to be called the 850. I liked it, decent power and the trans shifted well- firm , not too soft but not bone jarring either, a nice road car. It was sporty, and my wife felt safe in it- she called it her tank. Great brakes, decent acceleration in town, you didnt know you were driving a turbo - until you really pushed the pedal. Excellent gearing/ trans combo for the engine. I didnt get to drive it much though it was my wifes car! We had no engine problems, actually no problems except batt and bulb problems in 3+years

The only problems we had with it was the electrical systems- seemed to be a pretty common problem since I spoke with more than a few owners that had problems- battery, and lamps.

I would pay careful attention to the turbo- maintance is important as you know, and coked housings, and blocked oil lines will make the good deal not too good.

We leased it new and it had no defects, battery gave out end of year 3 so my wife deemed the car unreliable and so we got another. - I really should have kept it rather than the Passat we leased(wifes choice) we have had the vw a year and a half and its been in the shop for all sorts of small sh8t- broken seat x2, window, ash tray fell out, too many small things.

Used cars are selling for nothing- too many good deals on new- around here you can lease a new vehicle with free maintance, and warranty - or taken another way- no additional costs for 300 or so dollars a month with little to no cash out of pocket. A good deal if you stay within the milage limits. THe used car lots are full and I woul;d think that prices are low with the way new car sales are going, and the number of cars that come off lease from a few years ago.

Good Luck

Volvo's? Had about 11 of them over my 17 years of life on this earth heh. My dad worked for volvo before he died and collected them, classics and the newer models. Had about 3 from the years 1960 and below, they are the safest cars on the market if you check the studys. And the 850 series is one of the nicest ever produced. The 850 series is kind of what commemorates when Volvo decided to grow up and away from the box look, sure it still looks like a box but it is a real nice car! Go for it!

My family has driven various types of Volvo's over the years... from 240's to XC's to 960's, and I have to say that we've had nothing but good experiences with them. Before my X, I drove a 93' 240 that I absolutely beat the crap out of. It ran flawlessly until I sold it at 275,000 miles. Granted, the 850 is a much nicer car than the 240, but all Volvo's are built around the same principles. At one time, Volvo even offered $250,000 to the estate of anyone killed in one of their cars

So yeah, in my $.02... they're great!

We owned a 760 Turbo, it was a very nice car... for the most part it was good, we only had minor problems. like the muffler, and a loose ground cable for the alternator. The automatic climate control was having some issues, so we decided to get rid of the car. Turns out, there were electrical problems in that model. The 850 came in a few different trim levels. I think there were 4 different turbo models. I think the GLT had around 200hp. The 850 R model was around 300hp... If memory serves correct. I would contact the previous owner and make sure they know the process for turning a Turbo type vehicle off. Most people just shut it off!!! that is bad, we learned that the hard way. You are supposed to let the car idle for about 20 seconds before turning it off... It gives the turbo time to stop spinning and cool off a little. That is under normal driving, under hard driving conditions you should let it idle longer. The owners manual should go into greater detail.

Sorry for rambling!

Chad

PS. I think the 850 was the first front wheel drive Volvo offered.
