sure it'll work. Any tire carrier will work really, just weld that bad boy onto something sturdy.

anyone got pics?

It about time you guys put BII parts on the Ex, instead of just vise versa :)
The BII bed has supports behind the sheet metal on the pass side for the body mounted hinges.

You will want to really "spread the load" where the tire carrier is mounted on the hatch. You have to make the plate that bolts to the fiberglass about 5 times larger to keep from ripping the fiberglass door.
Anything over a 31" will wobble like crazy :)
BII stock carrier could use some support from the bumper, hint hint (upcoming mod)

fiberglass? rear lift gate on the "X" is all metal. Cherokee's is fiberglass. If you want to install the tire carrier on the liftgate think about all the extra weight you're putting on. It'll be pretty tough to keep the gate in the open position. On the BII carrier swings out for the gate to open... if you install it on the "X" you won't be able to swing it... no need to do that.

I picked up one at a junkyard not too long ago, and I was thinking of mounting it from some sorta pole welded to the frame. That way, I wouldn't have to reinforce the corner but it could still hook to the hatch. I think the hatch will need some stronger lifters though to hold the weight.

B2's have fiberglass doors and Ex's have metal door. 410 is right though B2's have sport in the fender for the load. ;) You will also have to cut part of the door for the hinge to bolt to the body above the tail light. That will be your problem area

IMO you would have a heck of a time attaching this hinge to the liftgate.

Not really. If you rip off the plastic on the inside there's a gaping hole wehre you could get in and weld a plate for support.

A post might ba a good idea, mounted to the bumper and the body above the tail light.

The liftgate is fiberglass(on the BII), the BII has the hook protion of the set up bolted to it, I believe that was what 410 was referring too when he said it the weight needed to be spread out. On my BII, that area, with a slightly over sized 225/R15 on a stock rim, started to crack from stress. Building the area up behind it would be a smart idea.

My only question is, why would you want that set up on and EX? Why not mount it on the roof, in a baxket or soemthing if you don't wnat it underneath? The BII style mount would be a difficult job to pull off...

The tire carrier mounts to the sheet metal along side the lift gate - not directly on the lift gate (that is if you are using a BII version).

I dont think the weight of the small plate that goes ont eh tailgate is going to be a problem for the hydraulic lifters, its just a small piece that the carrier locks onto.

I think you Explorer guys might look into a bumper mounted swing carrier (like Jefe built) to avoid the problems the bII carrier has...

The reason you dont want the tire on the roof is for center of gravity and also clearance into parking garages. Anything over a 33" tire will not fit under the explorer, even the 33" requires some slight modifications to get it to fit....

I agree... but the design of a liftage on an Explorer is a bit different than the one on the BII... and the taillight as well. It might work though with some crative sheet metal/welding and stuff...

plus the weight of the wheel - takes a lot of strength to take it down or throw one up on the roof for that matter.

That's right. The only thing on the gate would be the latch

Well this is too good. I found one for my truck and have been thinking about doing this for some time. I'm not going to run anything larger than 31's and from my research it should work with little problems.

do a little research... do a little test fitting and if you decide to install it let us know. It would save a lot of guys lots of money. Instead of buying bumpers with tire carriers we would just do a swap with some mods to the liftgate.

I'll definatly have to pick it up then and try it.
