To expand on what was said...With the shift points, you will get very little improvement there with a 1st GEN truck, since the A4LD is not computer controlled. All the chips can do is play around with the torque converter settings, which helps a little, but not as much as with 2nd gen/3rd gen trucks computer-controlled transmissions.
I didn't say that! I said "very little improvement" and that is true. There are, I believe, computer adjustments for the torque converter on the 1st gen, which can change the way the transmission operates to some extent...but not much.
The A4LD is NOT a computer controlled transmission so there's not a whole lot that can be done with shift points, for example. You'd need a shift kit/shift improver to do that.
So what can a chip do for the 1st gen? A lot. I would say it was the most noticeable single performance mod I made to my truck. It ought to be, it was the most expensive. Considerably more power. Ford leaves a lot of leeway and is conservative in their fuel programming, so the chip can open up the 4.0's potential. I'm also getting a little better fuel economy, on either program (87 octane performance or 93 octane performance).
When I switch back to stock, it's not the same truck.
I am NOT a salesman, heheh.
The only problem I have is that I get pinging on the 87 performance program. I generally run 93 performance program under which the truck runs great. I should probably have my 87 program re-tuned to fix that. I haven't since my truck has a periodic carbon problem, a little Sea Foam usually fixes it for about 6 months.
Originally posted by Rhett Browning For one, with a dual program chip you can go back to stock program easily (without pulling the chip). Why would you want to go back to the stock program? Offhand I can think of a couple of reasons:
If you are troubleshooting a problem, it is often helpful to go back to stock PCM. If you take it to a dealership for some service, it might also come in handy. If you run a 93 octane program, and the price of gas goes up to $2.50/gallon, you might want to go back to the stock program.
Couldnt you just get a Single-Stock Chip? Whats the big reason for a Dual if most people are gonna be running 93 anyway? If the price goes up, you could just go back to stock couldnt you? ...well, I guess that would kinda suck but still, lol. Is the 87 performance really that noticeable/worth it? I'm just trying to justify why I should spend more for the Dual instead of the Single-Stock since I'm participating in the current Group Buy, I just want to get the right thing. I did happen to read the idea about the "Economy Program" for 87, thats a really good idea by the way, so that could be a reason to get a Dual.
I am even considering a dual chip with 87 performance and 87 economy, for my 99 Mounty V8 AWD. Unless someone tells me the economy is little improvement over the performance. I'd use the economy for commuting and the performance for towing, highway, etc.

Get what you want, but I can tell you from experience that you won't be that impressed with an 87 performance program. You will WANT the 93 octane performance program. I suggest you get 87 fuel economy and 93 performance. That way you can have the best of both worlds.
