ARB another one bites the dust

Not sure when it blew, but Paul Gagnon noticed that my rear locker wasn't working at Truckhaven. I didn't hear a thing. No boom, clunk or clang to be heard. He was correct though, the locker wasn't leaking air, but it wasn't engaging either.

The guys at FST just pulled it apart and the verdict is "metal chunks". They found metal chunks in the carrier housing and shipped it out to ARB for a verdict on the warranty.

I sure hope they send out a "next generation" Airlocker.

it's time to scrap the 8.8? Hey Rick....my "stocker" (as Char would call it), made it home with no breakage. Interesting? Just kidding, maybe it happened on that big hill. The one where it seemed like it took you a long time to get it into 4x4. I was also wondering if it could of happened when you were trying to show us all up by tooling around in 2x4. That front axle has got to be a lot of extra weight to push around. Or it could be something crazy....like highway driving. When's the last time you put 300 miles on in one day, and most of it on pavement. Hope it works out for you....keep us posted.

Like I said I have no clue when or where it broke. I don't know the last time it worked for sure. The problem on the big hill was that my front lever wasn't engaged in 4 lo.

If ARB plays games with the warranty I'm most likely going to get a Detroit Locker. I would rather have the new gen airlocker though

Or maybe I need to get that Dana 60 I've been thinkin' about... Trouble with that is it requires the works, new gears, locker, disc brakes, etc...

rick, I'd put a detriot in the rear.. that way, you've always got a locker!

I'll end up having a full detriot in the rear, and an ARB in the front.

Detroits have their disadvantages also. In a near mirror image of the incident you helped me a out of a few months ago, Paul Bredehoft's Detroit pulled the backend of his Explorer down a loose steep hill. Same as what happened when I had my ARB locked up. There are times it helps to be open.

I found out today that a locker doesn't do all that great in the snow. Like Rick told me before it tries pulling you down hill and it did a good job of that in a couple of places.


It could have been a lot of things, wide tires, to much air in the tires, to much snow, whatever we had trouble but it was fun.

ARB warrentied my Airlocker with no problem. They said it had broken spider gears. As I said before I was completely taken by surpise when I found out my ARB was dead. No noises or anything.

Anyway, the new locker was shipped to FST last Friday and it should be installed tomorrow. And yes...they shipped the new style locker

That's cool Rick! They must have had a big shipment come in because mine is finally going to show up tomorrow. Sheesh... I only ordered it Dec 8th... but I'm just glad I am finally going to have it!

the only thing is you've got to cover installation out of your own pocket, right??? warranty does not cover it.

bomber, I would say ARB should be tough to brake but looks like it can happen to any product.

well, good they covered. (they just simply recalculated it, no advantage in rejecting Rick's claim - he might spread rumors about bad products and no Explorer owner in the country will buy ARB lockers) power!

They know that there is a problem with the old style so they are probably just sitting back hoping that they don't break. Also they'd be foolish to refuse a warranty claim on a truck that gets on the covers of magazines. It's just bad marketing.

well Rick I'm glad that they warrantied it. Glad you didn't get dicked around in every way possible like I did. Apparently I'm the only one I know who ever has a problem getting warranties honored.

I agree Matt, you didn't get treated fairly in your warranty claim. The only thing I can think of... and it's not your fault is that you had to drive home with the busted ARB and from what I understand it really self destructed into loads of pieces.

You and I know you have to get home anyway possible, they may have seen the mess and claimed exesive abuse.
