Auto Tranny Not Shifting after New Heads

I dont think there is an engine or tranny problem, when it was running a few days ago it ran much more smoothly then before I replaced the heads and alll the other stuff. I have seen no leaks (oil or coolent, other than the heater core). I think it could be a sensor or vac line maybe, as for the overheating problem, i think that when the heater hose blew the t-stat got stuck closed (maybe a bad t-stat) so im going to tak it out tonight and put it in some hot water and test it. I'm also thinking that the t-stat may not be opening soon enough because it does not get in the hot range, i just stays like around the L in normal and before the heater hose blew it was running much cooler, like in the N in Normal. Any advise would help. Also is there a way to test the water pump, i think its working but I dont want to rule it out before checking it. Thanks!!

The CEL is on, I have someone who can check the code for me but I cant get the car to him. I know on hondas you can use a paper clip and it will flash and give you the code, does that work on fords too?

I replaced the exhaust but not the cat, I will look at that too If I run out of other options. I replaced the exhaust about a month before the problems.

As for the stalling problem, the mechanic friend of mine said it could be the Idle Speed Sensor could not have set it self right when I got the truck running again (but hes also the one who told me there are 2 T-stats) so i figured I would get a second opinion.

Thanks

Brian

FUNNY STORY: I gave the car another look last night, with a friend of mine, we reset the ECU, and looked over everthing, could not find a problem, but there was still no coolent flowing through the radiator. So we turned off the car and I went to grab some tools to take the t-stat out and check it, well while I was in the garage he opened the radiator, and what do you know, NO COOLENT! and he's been giving me hell ever since, i guess i deserve it. Well we filled it up and it is running about the N in NORMAL. Also when we fixed that it took care of the other problems, well except the heater core, which will be done tonight. Thank everyone for their help, espically 410 fortune!!! Thanks!!!! and I hope it stays fixed!

The good news is you will never do that again. :)
When we completed a 4.0L conversion (into a Bronco II) we couldnt figure out for days why it wouldnt start, checked the fuel lines 100 times. Finally one mornining we looked at them again, sure enough they were backwards, reversed them and blamo runs perfect......

:)

glad you got it fixed :)

I just had that same problem Only took me a day though. After that I realized thaty because of the CA emmisions, I have to use the original computer which makes it a real pain since it is all being put into a 91 from a 93. Not only do the two wiring harnesses from under the hood not work with engine wiring, the dash harness is also different as well as the gauge cluster. I swear there going to be nothing mechanical or electrical left that is still 91 when I am done.

hahahahaha only thing left on my 88 still semi original is the wiring behind the dash and the carpet, thats it!

I just sent money for the dash harness. Should be here in a week or so. Since it has the CA emissions, the 91 harnesses and computer allow it to run, but only like crap. Because of the differences, mainly in the large bulkhead connecter pinning, some stuff works and others don't. Headlights are about all that worked right. Everything else was partial or not at all with the 93 under hood harnesses and 91 dash harness. Therefore, I am just going to replace the dash harness and instrument cluster and everything else will just plug in(a/c controls, all the steering whell crap, windows, etc.).
