I have an AWD explorer and I was wondering what would be involved in changing the AWD to 4WD. Is it has easy has just putting the 4WD transfer case in the AWD transfer case spot or would I have to do some other things. The reason I am doing this is because I am trying to make to where I can get airbags. If I go with the 4WD transfer case I can just lock it into 2WD and get rid of my front axle and driveshafts. Any help would be apperciated.

i left mine awd.

it don't bind so long as im 2-3" higher than my lowest travel

Yeah but I am not going to have all this work done just to go 2" lower. I plan on sitting alot lower then you when aired out.

i did not go 2" lower, have you seen my pictures?

i could have gone lower quite easily if i'd wanted to notch the front in a few places without changing anything else.

Why would you want to go to 4wd and then remove the front half of the driveline? There's a lot more to it.....

You could just remove the transfer case and replace the tailshaft on the transmission with one from a 2wd. Then you'd still have to tear out the front halfshafts. If you do that, you'll likely want to replace the front uprights with those of a 2wd anyways, as the bearings are much cheaper to replace (and with the oversize wheels I'm sure you'll be installing, the 4x4 hubs won't take the abuse for long). Since you're tearing everything else out anyways, may as well drop the axle and sell the whole front half of the drivetrain on Ebay to recoup some of the expense.

It's not going to be as simple as it seems....

Drew didn't you say you go 4" lower then stock? And if you went lower wouldn't that put the cv at to much of an angle?

Joe- I have been running a larger wheel for almost 2 years and haven't had a problem. Would I have the problem if the front axle wasn't there?

no, i go much much lower than 4" lower than stock.

it just can't be driven all the way down

couldnt you jsut get a 4x2 tranny and toss that on? then you wouldnt need all the other stuff.....

they did make some 5.0s with 2wd and 4 door......

I was told that I could just put a 4x2 tranny but wasn't sure. And Drew I what to be able to drive it low and I highly doubt that a shop would do what you did. By the way how is ut driving?

I know they make a 5.0 4door 2wd but i really like the limited look of the interior and exterior. If I could find one that I could trade over evenly with my X then I would probably do that.

Didn't Section do a swap to awd?

i believe you can get exactly what you want if you find the right truck in the south somewhere

no what i am saying is swap the drivetrain from an explroer that is a 4 door 2wd... then all that is needed to add to yours is the tranny and rear driveshaft......

I need to do something. If I could make it 2wd for under a grand then I would just keep mine. I wish I could find out exactly what I would have to do weather it is just replacing the tranny or replacing the transfer case.

as i have said before, replace the tranny with a 4x2 tranny and add in the 2wd driveshaft... thats it.....

Do you know how much a new tranny would cost?
