Back paint fading...

Alright except for all of you guys out there who are lucky enough to either have a '91 or never than say... a '98, this question is for you.

I know (because i've had two Ex's now) that unless kept garaged that the rear (next to the hatch)paint will fade over time in sunlight. Well i figure that this is a Ford defect for these years. On mine the fading is only just beginning, and i really don't want it to look like my older model. What can i put on it to either make it stop fading or restore it back to the original color?? Thanks in advance for replies...

If you put new paint over the old paint it will stop it from looking faded


Seriously, I know that I've read a thread where this was discussed (but I'm not sure if it was on this board). In the thread, they were claiming to get good results by masking carefully and painting over the old paint. I haven't needed to do this yet, but I see a lot of explorers with this problem.

Mine's like that bad... And it's just plain going away now I think...

I think I might try the new over the old thing... Can't hurt, and gotta fix the rust first!

Dead Link Removed I painted over mine and am really happy with the results.

My 97 Sport is still nice and shiny. I just wax it with KIT liquid wax. They usually fade due to them being painted with plain-ole' black non-clearcoated paint so the paint oxidizes.

I painted mine a year ago and still looks great! You should repaint it.

I don't think this is normally the case. I see lots of Explorers with this problem. I don't think that they have all been repainted.

You can probably slow it down by waxing or keeping it under a cover if you have the luxury.

The black on the doors is a sticker you can buy them from Ford I am not sure about the rear lift gate.

They're not clearcoated so whenever you wax or polish it, the paint will come off with it. That basically accelerated the fading process.
