I pulled the 9" out of my '84 van and noticed it "seems" like it has quite a bit of backlash. It has a powertrax lockright locker in it (lunchbox) and I remember it having more driveline windup since the day we put in the locker.

Anyone know how much backlash would be considered too much and if it is really normal to have more with the lockright in it?

With a powertrax you can have up to about 1/4 wheel revolution of backlash. I've done a bunch of installs in different axles, and have noticed it in all of 'em.

Funny...I noticed the same thing with mine. Mine however has a full spool. Must be the spline engagement.

How about with the 9" open? When I took it out I noticed I can get quite a bit of movement on the ring gear before it stops.. Looks to be a lot more than 9-15 thousanths.

Can I still measure/set the backlash to the factor specs with the lockright or would that be bad?

I would just check the gear contact pattern and see if it looks right.
