got into my 98 mounty(5.0 r.w.d.) and as i was backing out came to a stop and as i put it into drive that is when i heard a loud crashing sound looked around to see where the sound could have come from so i continued on my journey listenning to the car as i drove and nothing the car drove fine. on my way home as i left the store got into my car and as i was backing out came to a stop and as i put it into drive that is when i heard a loud crashing sound but this time i did not look around i know it is coming from my car but where? i have the car on jack stands and for the last three hours i have checked everything under the rear including spare tire! what the heck could it be?:us:thanks truker

Turdle, thank you for your quick response and happy holidays to you and your family; It's 6 a.m. and too early.P.S. I think it's the front caliper. I was not able to torque it to 85 foot pounds because of the akward angle. I'll try again later, get back to you then, with good news, I hope.

backin/boomin

:us:I torqued all caliper bolts and removed rear driver's side wheel only to find the emergency brake cable stuck half way into it's application.I don't know how this happened because the return spring is fine, just full of dirt but still working.I didn't check the shoes because when i was cleaning/lubricating the spring i noticed that my outer brake pad is wearing down faster than the inner so i put new pads on and test drove the car; Still goes boom when i reverse and drive but now it,only, goes boom once in a while and not every single time as before. Why are the pads wearing out unevenly?Does a bad caliper go boom!:us:

I would guess that this has the HAT style park brake system, If so what were the park brake shoes like... did you pull the rotors and check them??? If it's integrated callipers with the park brake system in the calliper then never mind that...
also did you check the rear drive shaft??? pull it right out and inspect it for worn or seized u-joints or a worn out slip joint...
its not uncommon for pads to wear uneven possibly due to worn or dry calliper slides or in the case of integrated callipers the cables being stuck could cause this...

keep looking...
